ediddy Posted September 7, 2013 #1 Posted September 7, 2013 I ordered the seat nuts from Rick Butler a few years ago and they worked great. Had my seat off one day cleaning the bike and when I started to put the seat on I dropped the right nut and couldn't find it. I am on my second set now and the right one keeps coming off. Anyone know what is causing this?
Huggy Posted September 7, 2013 #2 Posted September 7, 2013 You need to see a better doctor!!! I bet the wife isn't happy about it either!!!
tiffland Posted September 7, 2013 #3 Posted September 7, 2013 Are you sure the bolt isn't stripped? You might have to replace or rethread the bolt and use a different size nut. As another option, consider using purple or blue locktite to avoid the nut from coming loose. Both of those allow you to undo the bolt (blue being the more difficult).
steamer Posted September 7, 2013 #4 Posted September 7, 2013 Lost my nuts a couple of years ago, Just don't use them anymore.....much easier to remove the seat now.
wrenchrob Posted September 7, 2013 #5 Posted September 7, 2013 This is my second season running without any nuts. So far no problems.
kantornado Posted September 7, 2013 #6 Posted September 7, 2013 Lost my nuts about the first time I had to take the seat off when out on the road to add air to the shock. I figured if the seat came off while riding I REALLY HAVE A PROBLEM. Been about 10 years and so far no problems. I have had people who are shocked I don't have the seat bolted down, but like I said if the seat comes off I have a REAL PROBLEM.
Guest Posted September 7, 2013 #7 Posted September 7, 2013 Sorry, but I gave my left nut away many years ago. I need my right one.......

If you have to trailer your bike, you will have a problem, found my seat laying loose on the trailer deck. Lucky it never blew off. could of been expensive.
Condor Posted September 7, 2013 #9 Posted September 7, 2013 Outside of the stud threads being worn out, the way they stay on is to tighten them just till the threads get a thread and a half bite into the plastic of the self locking nut and get hard to turn. The first time I had a set I kept wanting to tighten them till they were snug. Didn't work and they wouldn't come off without using a pair of pliers on them. Kinda defeated the purpose of the things in the first place. Now I know.....
gmarshall Posted September 8, 2013 #10 Posted September 8, 2013 I bought a bag of white plastic metric wing nuts from grainier about a year ago. Keep the extras in my saddle bag but haven't lost one yet. They were only a few bucks. How about that, an answer to your problem and no nut jokes:stirthepot:
Brake Pad Posted September 8, 2013 #11 Posted September 8, 2013 are they round nuts or flat nuts? I just gotta ask?:rotf:
bongobobny Posted September 8, 2013 #12 Posted September 8, 2013 Kinda hard to be a stud with missing nuts...
MasterGuns Posted September 8, 2013 #13 Posted September 8, 2013 one can loose a right nut only once.
bj66 Posted September 8, 2013 #14 Posted September 8, 2013 All I know is that this is one of the best thread titles I've seen in quite awhile.
Bert2006 Posted September 8, 2013 #16 Posted September 8, 2013 NOOoooooooo pictures, some things I do not want to seeee.
Red Ryder Posted September 8, 2013 #17 Posted September 8, 2013 Had that happen to me a few times. Make sure it is not stripped out, both the seat bolt and nut. Then use Blue Locktight, worked great for me. Later-
bongobobny Posted September 8, 2013 #18 Posted September 8, 2013 Lost my nuts a couple of years ago, Just don't use them anymore.....much easier to remove the seat now. Did you look in Robin's purse???
BIG TOM Posted September 8, 2013 #19 Posted September 8, 2013 Did you look in Robin's purse??? I dont care who you are...now that thar is funny...!!!!!! sorry Bob , you asked for that...good one bongo
Guest Posted September 8, 2013 #20 Posted September 8, 2013 I really dont think I want to see pics of missing nuts.........
sendaro_99 Posted September 8, 2013 #21 Posted September 8, 2013 I tried the Rick butler nuts ( also over tightened and ruined them), wing nuts, and standard nuts, all failed. Try using a barrel nut which is much longer than a standard nut allowing you to tighten it easier and use a lock washer. never came loose after that:backinmyday:
steamer Posted September 8, 2013 #22 Posted September 8, 2013 Did you look in Robin's purse??? Don't have to.... she has them hanging from her rearview mirror. Shut up Tom!
Guest Posted September 8, 2013 #23 Posted September 8, 2013 I dont know what you guys are doing with your nuts but I had Ricks nuts on my seat for many years and they never loosened up on me. Im guessing that your stud is getting worn out or stripped. Im a pretty big guy and I put a lot of stress on my nuts but Ricks nuts hold up well for me under all that pressure. (you do realize that you cannot make this sound any better then it really is)
RockinRobin Posted September 9, 2013 #24 Posted September 9, 2013 Excuse me! I am really sorry that ediddy lost his nut but how did this get turned on me?
