Recently purchased a '99 RSV and having a minor electrical issue. The clock and trip odometers reset after the bike has been sitting. I've double checked both the fuse panels, including replacing the 10a fuse in the left side-panel. I've done a little bit of poking around here and haven't found other problem areas associated with this issue. Hopping someone can guide me in the right direction.

Check you battery connections make sure they are clean and tight, if that does not fix it, may be time to get a new battery, mine was doing the same when the battery was about 6 years old, new battery and the problem is gone.

Seems as if there is a current draw that causes the battery to get below a certian point it drops the voltage on the memory holding circuit below the level required to keep the RAM from dumping.

I need to put the battery tender leads on the bike anyways, so good enough time to clean and grease the battery terminals. I don't know how old the battery is since I just purchased the bike about a year ago. Previous owner did mention the bike sat for a while hence why he was selling.

 

I guess on a related note the bike does seem a little slow the fire off, could be like my old Virago when the battery got weak you then had a weak spark

The battery age code is generally printed on the side of the batt somewhere. A8 would be Jan 2008 for instance. B would be Feb. Cleaning the anodes won't help a weak battery. Plus even a newer battery will go bad if allowed to discharge completely over a long period of time....

Does your radio presets also disapear? Trip odo, clock and radio presets would reset when you disconnect the battery, so this might help lead you in one direction if such is the case..

No, just the OD & Clock, radio holds the memory just fine. I do know about the date codes on batteries, just haven't taken the bike apart enough to see how old the battery really is. Previous owner gave me the "its a new battery" line, but for what I paid for the bike I have no problems getting a new one.

This spring I had to replace my battery too. Bike would turn over but not start, Trip odometer cleared.... but battery presets were fine.

 

Put a voltmeter on the battery and it showed 10.4V. Good battery is just under 12V (I believe).

 

If the battery has some juice it is enough to keep the radio presets. I don't know if the trip odometer had cleared before I tried starting it or not (under load of starting the amperage/volts might have dropped too low to keep the trip odometer).

 

Anyone know if the radio has a separate rechargeable battery to keep the presets or does it draw from the bike's battery?

 

I'd say your battery has gone bad and you need to replace it. Look at the Deka batteries...that is what people here go to.

I have a AGM battery from the other bike I got clipped/totaled earlier this year. I used it a few times in the tractor this summer, and its only a year old. If its the right size and CCAs I'll just replace it.

If you disconnect the battery, the trip ODO and radio presets change. Last year I ran into some issues when starting the bike where I'd press the starter button and sometimes get this 'false start', the engine would half crank over and felt like it jammed up against the compression.. when ever it did this, the radio and trip ODO would reset.. On the next press of the starter button, the bike would turn over normally and start.. Turned out to be dirty contacts on the starter button itself..

Absolutely right.

So... battery voltage can be low enough to lose the clock and trip settings but keep the radio presets.

So went through my usual Used Vehicle Maintenance last night, battery is a wet cell and 3 of the cells were down below the top of the plates. I filled it back up and charged the battery. It is holding a charge and not "sagging" on start up any more.

 

Not saying I trust it, but I'll use it for a few more weeks until a few of the house repairs are paid for...then a new battery over the winter.
