Midrsv Posted February 24, 2008 #1 Posted February 24, 2008 I was in the parts store today checking out the gear oils and I noticed that none of them had the GL4 spec that the Venture service manual calls for. All were GL5. Does anyone know if the ratings are backward compatible? Can GL5 be used for a GL4 application? what oil do you recommend? Dennis
flb_78 Posted February 24, 2008 #2 Posted February 24, 2008 I use Mobil 75w90 synthetic. Get it at most auto parts houses. I "borrow" mine from work.
heatonmt Posted February 24, 2008 #3 Posted February 24, 2008 It is not borrowing unless you return it when you are through with it. HA HA :7_6_3[1]::7_6_3[1]:

Dennis Yes usually if the spec is equal to or greater then your OK. I.E. GL5 is higher then GL4, GL6 is higher then GL4 or GL5. I might be wrong on this I'm just going by what I have read, I'm not an expert on oil.
KeithR Posted February 24, 2008 #6 Posted February 24, 2008 My local dealer sold me Yamalube Gear Oil SAE90 AGMA 4 EP said thats what they use in all the bikes they service ? Keith
V7Goose Posted February 24, 2008 #7 Posted February 24, 2008 It's in the manual somewhere, but not easy to find - I think maybe in the specs in the back? Anyway, I found it after I went all over the place to find GL4 (which I did find eventually). Had a lot of GL5 on the shelf, but didn't want to use it while I thought Yamahaha only said GL4. IF I remember correctly, GL5 is not compatible with certain gear boxes that have bronze bushings in them, or something like that. Not a problem for us. Goose
Midrsv Posted February 24, 2008 Author #8 Posted February 24, 2008 I just picked up a quart of Mobil 1 75w90 synthetic, GL5. Hope it works. Dennis
Freebird Posted February 24, 2008 #9 Posted February 24, 2008 It will be fine. That's what I've used in mine for several years.
hig4s Posted February 24, 2008 #10 Posted February 24, 2008 I use Lucas 80/90 gear oil.? You might want to read this study! http://www.amsoil.com/lit/g2457.pdf I use Mobil 1 or Castrol Syntec
dray Posted February 24, 2008 #11 Posted February 24, 2008 http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/fgr.aspx this is what i use and its great read the Applications you'll want to see the last sentence of it refers to the GL 4:thumbsup2:

I've never seen a test on the Amsoil "long life" but I would guess because of the name and higher price, the Amsoil "Severe Gear" would be a little better. Severe Gear was the top rated gear oil in the test results link I listed above.. Mobil 1 was the next best rated, and of the 12 synthetic and 2 dino oils, Lucas synthetic was rated last.
Guest mmmouse Posted February 24, 2008 #13 Posted February 24, 2008 It's gear oil....not Rocket Fuel. I use the same lube I use in my outboard lower unit...I have pleanty of that laying around.
