Venturing Sole Posted September 5, 2013 #1 Posted September 5, 2013 2006 RSV, 95,000 miles. I have an intermittent problem in which the throttle very slowly rolls off. Occurs when I release the throttle or when I blip the throttle during gear shifts. I have lubed the cables with oil and WD40, I have applied grease to the inside of the grip and where the cable wraps around the grip drum. I have tweeked the cable adjustment nuts under the gas tank at the carburetor. Almost seems like there is a vacuum keeping the engine from decelerating RPMs? Don't know if that's even possible. When I wind up the throttle and release it, it is very sluggish to drop RPM and actually never goes back to idle without me "helping" the hand grip. If the engine is off, the throttle mostly returns by itself, but not when the engine is running. Some days it behaves almost right, but most days it is sluggish. I know the cables are not broken and there is no slack at either end (grip drum or carb end). Anyone experience something similar or have any advice. Thanks David
Sleeperhawk Posted September 5, 2013 #2 Posted September 5, 2013 I still think you have a binding issue with the grip. I had that same issue and when I got rid of the Kuryakins (spelling) and went to the Avon grips, no more slow roll back. I know it is associated with the groove in the Kuryakin grip, but how to prove it, when you cannot "see" it is another story. All I know is when I loosened the bolts on the chrome housing, it snapped back, but when tightened back down the slow roll. So I know there was a binding issue.
etcswjoe Posted September 5, 2013 #3 Posted September 5, 2013 (edited) This seems to happen everytime I take the carbs off one of my bikes and it is a real Pain to get these right, you have to make sure that the nuts on the carbs are set just so and the tension on the throttle is right. I also found out the cables will bind if they are pushed too far into the fairing or pulled out too far. Another thing to check is where the cables come out of the cruise control junction that they are crossed and not bound up. The service manual has a procedure but I have never tried it I usally get it worked out after a few tries. Edited September 5, 2013 by etcswjoe
dacheedah Posted September 5, 2013 #4 Posted September 5, 2013 I would look at the junction box where the cruise is, make sure the cable ends are ok
Venturing Sole Posted September 19, 2013 Author #5 Posted September 19, 2013 So I performed an experiment. I took my Kuryakin throttle grip off and put the stock throttle grip on (without bar weight since I have the Flanders bar). The throttle roll-off delay was still present, so I deduced it was not the grip. Now for a confession...when I made adjustments to the cable nuts under the gas tank at the carburetor, I was lazy and didn't remove the lower left cowling to check adjustment at the cruise control vacuum pump. After several days with the original throttle grip and continued roll-off delay, and having to help the throttle grip get back to idle, I decided to check the cruise cable. It should not have surprised me, but I found the locking nuts were loose and the cable was not being held tight to the bracket. Essentially the cable was allowed to float when it should have been secured to the bracket. I secured it and voila, throttle rolled off perfectly all the way back to idle. I put the Kuryakin throttle grip back on and all is right with the world again. Except for my fuel gauge flashing and fuel trip meter not working and fuel idiot light not coming on, but that will be another post, I suppose. Thanks to all for the advice. Perhaps this thread will serve to help someone else in the weeks or months to come who might have a similar issue.
