nibejeebies Posted September 3, 2013 #1 Posted September 3, 2013 (edited) Reposted in correct forum okay so Im having an issue with my 86 VR. My brother has had the same model for about a year now, I found one that littlery matches his 86 VR down to the same paint scheme. The only difference in the two is mine has foot boards and a heal toe shifter where his has the standard pegs and toe shifter. Well Friday the small edge of the generator/sator cover where the shifter connects broke completely off leaving me stuck in first gear. We got it home and started our quest and was lucky to find the cover some 1.5 hours away. We went and picked it up and got it home replaced it on the motorcycle. However we have apparently done something wrong. it would seem that the gears are shifting backwards (pull up on the tow and the gear goes down, on the indicator) we can also not get the bike to turn over. Press the start button and there's a click and what sounds like a brief whine from the old tube fuse box... not completely sure where it is coming from however. Also the heel tow shifter doesn't seem to be very secure even though we went over everything no missing spacers, nuts, bolts, washers... and everything is tight. Anything that you can suggest would be greatly appreciated. I have pics if needed.... thanks guys. Edited September 3, 2013 by nibejeebies Typo

It needs to point up, or shift pattern will be backwards. Saw your other post in 2nd gen forum, 2nd gens are 99-present. 1st gens are 83-93. MKI's are 1st gen 83-85. MKII's are 1st gen 86-93. Gary
Venturous Randy Posted September 3, 2013 #3 Posted September 3, 2013 To add to Dingy's great pics, if you look at each of the shafts, there is a score mark that lines up with the split in the clamp. As far as the heel/toe shifter, I have heard several that have broken their stator cover with this shifter. It may be due from the load being different during shifting. RandyA
Trader Posted September 3, 2013 #4 Posted September 3, 2013 also...my 83 heal toe shifter was just plain worn out and probably needs a bushing.
Venturous Randy Posted September 3, 2013 #5 Posted September 3, 2013 When you replaced the cover, did you use a new gasket? The clearances are so tight that if you did not use a gasket, it can bind up. RandyA
paysaw Posted September 3, 2013 #6 Posted September 3, 2013 I just did my stator cover last night on my 84.The previous owner did a stator upgrade but put the shifter in backwards. It is tricky because the weight of the joint wants to make the joint reverse. There is a little line on the shifter shaft that you see.I had to orient the line so it was in a different position. It is not an easy task so be patient.
