While I was in there replacing the stator, I replaced the gear indicator switch...along with the spring, pointer and O-ring.

When I put the tester on the positive battery post and touch the shift indicator plug, it shows the switch is working properly in each position. (goes to ground when in that gear.

But...the only indication I have on the dash is the neutral light...when in neutral....and the gear display works but only in 4th and 5th (not even in neutral)

Would this be a symptom of needing to solder the CMU? Is it even part of the CMU? All other indicators on the CMU work just fine!

There are also two connectors in the circuit path for the indicator. One near the selector plate and other at CMU head.

The indicator most likely runs through the CMU, due to the conversion of the ground on each gear selected into a digital output.

It has to be partially working as the neutral indicator is from same ground source.

So I imagine the connector close to the CMU must be behind the headlight?????????

I can test that plug....but assuming that plug is OK...then what?

The gear indicator circuits run through the 14 pin plug that attaches directly to the CMU. No other connectors other than one at indicator plate in gear circuits.

Doubtful it is that plug, it is in a very clean sheltered area.

I think you are looking at soldering CMU.

CMU has 2 circuit boards, see picture. There is another possible connection point between the circuit board that is the 2nd one to be removed and the LCD. About 3/16" wide, 1/4" tall and 1 1/2" long (all approximate). Connector is rubber like material, and it might be dirty and needs cleaned. Don't have a picture of that area of CMU.

Was it failing and that was reason for replacing components?

Before I changed the indicator switch it was working exactly the same as it is now.

gear indication only in 5th....showing 4th for every other position.

Neutral light works still...and it used to show N on the panel...but it seems I've lost that too now..

Like I said....I tested the switch itself (thru the closest plug) and it grounds as it should in each position.

My gear indicator is not showing anything except 5th. The Neutral light works, but doesn't indicate neutral on my display.

I changed the spring, pin and switch.... put 12v into the plug leading to the shift indicator and checked each pin of the plug to verify that the gear indicator switch is working correctly. It is. (The pin/switch goes to ground when selected)

My question.....Can I do the same test to ensure the plug/wires are OK at the CMU plug or is there anything in between that I could fry? I don't want to let any smoke out!

How can I test the CMS itself to see if the indicator itself is working?

Look at schematic cut in post #4. You can put a GROUND signal on each of the 6 wires coming from the switch plate at the CMU head without harming anything. Nothing that will backfeed into something unintended.

Color codes are shown, there are no duplicates of colors in that connector. Color code chart is attached below, also on schematics linked below.

Not sure which year bike you are working on. Schematics are located at link below.
