SARNA66 Posted September 1, 2013 #1 Posted September 1, 2013 Anyone ever done it? been thinking of makin it 1 of a kind
Kirby Posted September 1, 2013 #2 Posted September 1, 2013 Whatever blows your frock up. Just not for me. I think ..., well, 'nuff said.
Trader Posted September 1, 2013 #3 Posted September 1, 2013 Besides looking ridiculous...why would anyone want to put ape hangers on their bikes? It just can't be comfortable to have your arms up at, or over your eye level! Nevermind loss of control etc. oops....did I say that in my outside voice? But....as was said....whatever turns your crank!
Barrycuda Posted September 1, 2013 #4 Posted September 1, 2013 It does have the potential to cause injury or damage to your wrist ( carpal tunnel) as well as being potentially illegal. Check with your state to see if any handle bar height ordinances are there
reddevilmedic Posted September 1, 2013 #5 Posted September 1, 2013 I have 16" apes on the Victory.....I also have, freakishly, long arms. 6'3, 34 inseam....ive put 8ooo miles on them this riding season...
Bummer Posted September 1, 2013 #6 Posted September 1, 2013 Anyone ever done it? been thinking of makin it 1 of a kind Indiana's current law states that handlebars may not rise above the shoulders of the rider. Of course, do it if it pleases you, but be aware that you may be courting official attention.
saddlebum Posted September 1, 2013 #7 Posted September 1, 2013 In Ontario the Highway traffic act states that the handle bars must not exceed 15" above the highest point of the seat when compressed by the riders weight.
SARNA66 Posted September 2, 2013 Author #8 Posted September 2, 2013 Im not talking extreme-just a lil rise and pull back slightly- however Im already thinking against it lol thanks Chris:12101:
Venturous Randy Posted September 2, 2013 #9 Posted September 2, 2013 TN law is 15" above the seat. My stock bars are probably over that with the lowered Corbin seat I have. I just could not imagine how much more difficult it would be than it already is to maneuver these things around at low speeds with ape hangers. RandyA
Huggy Posted September 2, 2013 #10 Posted September 2, 2013 Talked to people who have had them and it is really hard on the arms. Your arms get sore really fast I'm told. More for show and effect then practical they say.
midnightventure Posted September 2, 2013 #11 Posted September 2, 2013 One of the guys at work put them on a Roadstar. We all made fun of him and after a while I noticed he had taken them off. I asked if he had gotten tired of being kidded about it. He said he couldn't see with his arms up there and took them off for safety.
uglydave Posted September 2, 2013 #12 Posted September 2, 2013 Anyone ever done it? been thinking of makin it 1 of a kind had them on my RSTD. had 2 inch risers and 16" apes.looked great but not the best for cruising on longer trips thats them on the pic of my bike before i changed them out.
MasterGuns Posted September 2, 2013 #14 Posted September 2, 2013 If you go for it, please post a picture.
Rab Christie Posted September 2, 2013 #15 Posted September 2, 2013 I have 16" apes on my Suzuki VL. I like the look and find them ok to ride with. not good in a head wind though. arms get sore after a few miles trying to hold yourself up. No laws here in UK about max bar height.
camos Posted September 2, 2013 #16 Posted September 2, 2013 Im not talking extreme-just a lil rise and pull back slightly- however Im already thinking against it lol thanks Chris:12101:My Virago has buckhorn bars which some consider to be mini-apes or perhaps monkey bars. I angled them back so there is more pullback than rise which works better for me. There are bars available with whatever rise you might want. Take a look at this link for Bagger Bars which are not so high but still rather unique looking.
reddevilmedic Posted September 2, 2013 #17 Posted September 2, 2013 I rode to key west from Michigan, and back a few months ago...now, I just did a 2000 mile trip around lake superior...I do tire after about 250 miles with no fairing...but I generally do only 300-350 a day...you should be in good shape.
motorcycle_1300 Posted September 2, 2013 #18 Posted September 2, 2013 With your arms up there the wind can blow right up your sleeves and dry the sweat, people could go months without taking a bath.
JohnT Posted September 2, 2013 #19 Posted September 2, 2013 Ape hangers are one mod that I just don't get. They make no sense to me at all. But hey, whatever floats the boat.
reddevilmedic Posted September 2, 2013 #20 Posted September 2, 2013 don't you remember?????? guess im still a kid..
wizard Posted September 3, 2013 #21 Posted September 3, 2013 I enjoyed the apes on my Harleys, never had any issues with them. Found them to be very comfortable on long rides.
Stanman Posted September 4, 2013 #22 Posted September 4, 2013 I've been in a cage following a bike with apes...The riders hands were about eye level, and to me he looked like a dork.....figured he had almost as much intelligence as a chimp. They are not for me but whatever turns a persons fancy.
Raider58 Posted September 4, 2013 #23 Posted September 4, 2013 I say if it is comfortable for you, do it. Nothing worse than to ride if your arms and back hurts by hunching over. I have 10"mini apes on my raider and love them.
spear Posted September 4, 2013 #24 Posted September 4, 2013 And what are the additional costs? Cables, hydraulics, wiring, etc etc. All have to be extended!
reddevilmedic Posted September 4, 2013 #25 Posted September 4, 2013 yep...$$. cables are all custom by Barnett. I bought a back-up set...all 4! $$$$. really though, cables cost about 400.00.
