Keep us posted on how this works out because if that is a fix, I would carry one on trips.

I clicked on the link, looks like a good place to shop, real mechanics not just part swappers.

Folks, I have found the answer that lets us keep our oem pump. www.powersportswarehouse.com . It's item number 18-4615. It is the points switch that goes bad on these pumps and this is a new set. We can just replace them and keep the oem pump for $33.85 plus shipping. I just ordered mine. It even has the same plug so basically a plug and play unit. It is the K&L Supply universal fuel pump point switch kit. If you type in fuel pump in their search box and click on see all results it will be down on the left side of the page.

Yes, the part number does not bring it up for some reason. Just type in fuel pump and click search then click on see all results and it's there. It's the K&L supply pictured in I think the third row down, first in the row. I will post the results of my rebuild asap. I should get the part in by the 9th according to their estimate on shipping date.

If it is Only the points then this forum has been giving seafoam a whole lot of money for nothing.

...I'm just sayin'

Maybe, maybe not. The mechanical parts of the pump, and seal, (operating poorly due to poor fuel) could be having problems with the ethanol fuel, and then causing a problem on the electrical side. Sorta like a stalled rotor on a compressor...it can cause issues with the electronics.

And keep in mind, ethanol fuel should be treated anytime it sits in these bikes for more than a week or so. (Seafoam is only one of several good brands)

If the new points set seems to improve things, I would STILL be treating the fuel...ethanol is famous for causing problems with seals and with water separation.

All I ever run for fuel is ethanol blended 15%. I have a 2006 RSV Midnight. 27,000 miles I have put on, PO 5000, 32,000 total. I have not had any fuel related problems. I try to put stabil in when to cold to ride, Oct. - Apr.. I do not have speedo heeler to correct the error with odometer problem. My fuel mileage runs from 42-47. I know that it would be less if I had correct odometer reading. Did an iron butt ride with a Garmin and over the course of 1050 miles difference in odo. reading was 31 miles less on the bike odo. My conclusion 3% less mileage? Still not bad.

I have already bought two OEM pumps from pinwall for about 40 bucks each, both test out great, I keep one in the trunk, my original oem has not failed me YET :fingers-crossed-emo

Both pumps came out of newer Ventures.

So far I have never used ethanol in my tank.

Try the small air ports for the good stuff :rotf: only 120 octane though.

Cougar,

I only have 13,500 miles on my 07 RSV and mine stuck ( which is why I started this thread). You mention "newer" above - How much newer than 13,500 miles?

ALL: Does anyone know why my fuel pump was burning hot and not clicking / not pumping fuel - were the guts stuck with voltage going to the "pump" ? It doesn't sound to me that my points were stuck but the actually works of the pump were stuck. Does anyone know the mechanics of the pump to tell me why my pump was so hot when it wasn't functioning?

Thanks all

One was from from a 2008 and the other was from a 2006 I believe.

the miles were around 9K and 17 K I have 25 K on my trike and still

no issues, However I run a AUX tank with a second pump and I could

run off that one if my OEM ever crapped out one day, I still keep the

OEM back-up in the trunk just in case.

I have a switch to run the tanks independent of each other.

Seems like it is a crap shoot as to when the oem pump fails.

Unfortunately I could buy a brand new $250 pump - put it in my trunk and discover it to be bad too.

Bummer

Still 12 volts going to it even if it is not pumping so yes it will get hot without pumping.

The airpcraft pump is my choice for a pump. Way less expensive and I bet money it is better quality and will last longer.

Which aircraft pump and does it exactly replace/install or require mounting modification?

thanks

Facet 40171: from Aircraft Spruce & Specialty Co. I mounted mine where the OEM pump was located. To hold it in place I used a sheet metal screw and a tie wrap. I had to drill a hole for the sheet metal screw and it required a 90 degree drill due to the location. You will need fittings for the pump and some fuel line. I suggest moving your fuel filter under the seat while you do this for ease of replacement.:080402gudl_prv:

LA is close to LA - can I pop over

Oh wait. Different LA's.

I can change my oil but what you describe is beyond my comfort zone working with explosives.

Thanks though.

In my logic, and I may be wrong, but the intermittent nature of these pump malfunctions, lends itself to the electrical portion of these pumps, not the mechanical. I mean mine is working well again and I just filed the points. I don't trust it so the points have been ordered. I hope this works.

You did something spectacular like that with a $48.50 fuel pump (Watch the part numbers, click on the pump)

http://www.aircraftspruce.com/search/search.php?s=40171&x=25&y=17

and didn't take pictures and do a HOW TO with a parts list:confused24:?

Isn't that a crime?

That's a great idea for reliability.

Got my replacement points.http://www.powersportswarehouse.com/pages/PublicMedia/HotItemImage?brandId=650&filename=335484f6a9c.jpg Powersportswarehouse.com was very quick. I will do business with them again. I have'nt put them on yet, they are in my trunk if needed. Since I cleaned the contacts with a mild file the oem pump has worked perfectly. I figure, if I need to replace them on the side of the road, it's only a 30 minute job, if I take my time. I am convinced this is the problem with our pump's. $38.00.....I can live with that. This is a great find. Now I need to figure out what I did with the non-op pump I took out of Seven. Hope I didn't pitch it... Repair it and I'll have a pump ready to go when needed. I'll also know whether I'll run into any snags with installation. If it really does work out I can see some industrious member on this board selling rebuilt fuel pumps and making a few bucks on the side... Skydoc??....

I ordered the Pump and I am switching over and going to sell my old pump that works fine. So I NEED someone to donate the Plug end off an old pump so I don't have to cut my good one!

I go too long and too far from home to have any pump problems. So I am doing the switch out now. Of course I'll do a how to with pictures.

But I will need the wire end cut off an old Pump. anyone?

Bump back to the top.

Condor, did you find the old dead pump and repair it with the points kit?

IronMike, were you able to swap out the pump? Were you able to salvage the wiring on the working OEM unit?
