For some reason I was taking off from a light to get up to freeway speed and my bike stopped accelerating and a grinding noise proceeded to emanate from the rear end. Got it home and found this. Couldn't be from the um "aggressive" shifting could it? :-)

Yikes.

How many miles are on that?

How often did you repack that with grease?

88,500 mi and every time I change a rear tire. Last change at 81,000. High Pressure Moly

Good to know. I have often wondered how long some of these parts are expected to last.

If memory serves me correctly, FLB_78 (I may have the numbers on his screename wrong) had a similar issue around 105k miles or so. As far as I know he was good about maintaining his too.

What did it end up doing to the gear teeth on the differential. I am assuming the female diff gear is made from harder material?

Yes it is and it appears ok.

I would guess that part from Yamaha would be quite expensive. E-bay has complete used wheel and tires for under 100 bucks. I got one a couple of years ago and it is great having a spare rear tire. Don't have to get rid of that one with lows miles left on it just because I'm heading out a a trip. That would also give you that part you need.
