AKRefugee Posted August 29, 2013 Share #1 Posted August 29, 2013 (edited) For some reason I was taking off from a light to get up to freeway speed and my bike stopped accelerating and a grinding noise proceeded to emanate from the rear end. Got it home and found this. Couldn't be from the um "aggressive" shifting could it? :-) Ride Happy Ride Safe Edited August 29, 2013 by AKRefugee
LilBeaver Posted August 29, 2013 Share #2 Posted August 29, 2013 Yikes. How many miles are on that? How often did you repack that with grease?
etcswjoe Posted August 29, 2013 Share #3 Posted August 29, 2013 What did it look like last time you changed your tire? Glad you were able to get back home.
AKRefugee Posted August 29, 2013 Author Share #4 Posted August 29, 2013 Yikes. How many miles are on that? How often did you repack that with grease? 88,500 mi and every time I change a rear tire. Last change at 81,000. High Pressure Moly
LilBeaver Posted August 29, 2013 Share #5 Posted August 29, 2013 88,500 mi and every time I change a rear tire. Last change at 81,000. High Pressure Moly Good to know. I have often wondered how long some of these parts are expected to last. If memory serves me correctly, FLB_78 (I may have the numbers on his screename wrong) had a similar issue around 105k miles or so. As far as I know he was good about maintaining his too. Flyinfool Posted August 29, 2013 Share #7 Posted August 29, 2013 I wonder where the grease all went. That sure looks like it has been dry for a long time.

Midnight Posted August 29, 2013 Share #10 Posted August 29, 2013 What did it end up doing to the gear teeth on the differential. I am assuming the female diff gear is made from harder material?

2WHEELSFORME Posted August 30, 2013 Share #12 Posted August 30, 2013 I would guess that part from Yamaha would be quite expensive. E-bay has complete used wheel and tires for under 100 bucks. I got one a couple of years ago and it is great having a spare rear tire. Don't have to get rid of that one with lows miles left on it just because I'm heading out a a trip. That would also give you that part you need.
