When my 83 was only a couple of months old, I had mine want to come up also. I was a little more fortunate because I was approaching a red light and the screw still held the back, keeping it from flying away. I had had the panel off the previous day, and I assumed that I had not gotten the front tab inserted correctly. Since then, every time I install the cover, before I install the screw, I pull up on the front and verify that the front tab is in the slot.

You said that yours flew completely off......Did you have the rear screw in?

There's a gromet that fits in the front slot that the front tab slides into and keeps it fairly snug. The tab at the rear should keep the cover from sliding forward and smacking you in the chest. If the tab is gone, the reason is there originally was a crush sleeve that kept the rear tab gromet from getting crushed and breaking the rear tab off. The crush sleeve falls out easily when removing the cover for anything, and that's the reason a lot of the tabs are broken off. Many riders use a large washer to keep the cover from sliding forward. So, if you have the front gromet and rear tab secured there's no way that cover could come loose... My :2cents:

The rear tab is broken on mine....and I never even knew there was supposed to be a rubber grommet for the front. ( I learn somethingnew from this forum every day!)

Before I put on the large washer on the rear I had the front "float" up a bit...but never came off completely. I always give the cover a good tug backwards before tightening the rear screw.

The front grommet is no longer available.

I used a piece of rubber fuel line split lengthwise and put that around the inside of the sheet metal where the front grommet should go.

I did have my cover come off once but I had just had it off and I am sure that it was just a case of not having the front tab in the slot. I have had the bike up to an air speed of around 120 (driving at 80 into a ~40 headwind)

Jeff, that's a good idea with the split fuel line. I just put a bunch of layers of duct tape on the front tab until it was snug but could still be removed. I also make sure that it's snapped back in place EVERY TIME and then install the rear screw.

I had mine blow up once, but since I had my handlebars in a non-stock position, they prevented it (along with the flange under the seat) from coming off completely. Does come as a shock when it happens.

I haven't had the rear screw installed in my center cover for the last several years (at least 10,000 miles. As long I as have the cover properly seated, it stays secure - until I need to remove it for starting fluid use, or to access the fuse box.:bluesbrother:

If you pull off your side covers you can see there the rear mounting points are for the bracket that the rear screw goes in. You can loosen the mounting bolts and rotate that bracket forward or backwards. Move it backwards as much as you can go pull the tab on the false cover onto the front bracket. Won't come loose again.

From my Droid wherever I may happen to be at any given moment.

Mine had the rear screw tab broke off when I got it. I made a metal tab and screwed it to the cover. Seemed to rattle around and I figured this was normal, until it came loose and flipped up in my face at about 70mph. My fix was to glue a square of foam rubber underneath the cover and force it aft before tightening the screw tab. It no longer rattles around and has not came loose since . . .

When you are typing out a post the words that are misspelled get the squiggly red underline. To find out how they should be spelled you can right click on the word and a list of suggestions will appear provided that it can guess what you were trying to type. By looking at the suggestions perhaps you can learn how some of the words you use are spelled and you will be more easily understood by the people who are reading what you have posted. It is very interesting that Yamaha Australia is correctly spelled while "any" and "fuse" are not, but you spelled these the same consistently yet incorrectly.

Passionately sharing experiences while riding your freshly repaired Venture is greatly appreciated.

Spell Checking is optional.

Hey Steve,

What color is your bike? Perhaps one of the members can find a False Tank Cover of the right Color stateside to replace your broken one. I have the fuse box cover from a parts bike. You are welcome to it. I will PM you to get your address. :thumbsup2:

Oh man. Are we checking spelling now? Between what my note and my note 2 do to my posts I'm about to be banned!

Personally it's kinda fun to try to figure out what they meant to say, like a brain exercise.

I agree poor spelling can make a post hard to understand. But we can figure it out...especially if thoughts are grouped and don't all run together in one long bunch of mixed up letters!.
