GeorgeS Posted August 24, 2013 #1 Posted August 24, 2013 What years of V-Max Rear drive can be used on an 08 RSTD ?? Does it matter which year of V-max the rear comes off of ???
Guest Posted August 24, 2013 #2 Posted August 24, 2013 George, its easier to let these guys do your rear. http://rmsportmax.com/gateway.html Your old unit will fit nicely into a mid size flat rate Priority box and John usually turns it around in a day. They will fit the Vmax gears into your unit and you will still have the sensor hole.
Barrycuda Posted August 24, 2013 #3 Posted August 24, 2013 They ask that you drain the oil prior to shipping. I only know because I spoke to them about it for my bike and John mentioned to PLEASE drain the oil. I guess they have been getting soggy mail...

RSTDdog Posted August 24, 2013 #5 Posted August 24, 2013 You can use any year V-max rear end but you will have to drill the large hole for the speedo sensor and drill/tap the small hole for the retaining bolt.
Kirby Posted August 24, 2013 #6 Posted August 24, 2013 Not trying to hijack this thread but since I have access to a tool shop at work(I'm a toolmaker), does anyone have the hole location for the sensor and tapped hole? I've got a '99 Vmax and an RSV and thought that one day I might try this since so many are having it done and reporting the benefits of it. Then if if didn't work out to my liking I could just swap them back. All I need is a reference point to start from and the sizes of the holes.

Why don't you just take your RSV rearend and measure the hole location/size and then machine your V-Max rear? RandyA
MikeWa Posted August 25, 2013 #8 Posted August 25, 2013 If you are going to drill it you will probably want to disassemble it first. So why not just swap the gears? Mike
k9cottage Posted August 25, 2013 #9 Posted August 25, 2013 i just did my swap i used a fjr diff was going to drill and tap the fjr but when i striped it down turned out easier to just swap the gears took about 1 1/2 hours all up as i have a sidecar it really made a big difference .
Kirby Posted August 25, 2013 #10 Posted August 25, 2013 If you are going to drill it you will probably want to disassemble it first. So why not just swap the gears? Mike Good idea, might just try that before machining. Thanks all! Now back to your regularly scheduled programing.
RSTDdog Posted August 25, 2013 #11 Posted August 25, 2013 For those that have done it or are suggesting just swapping out the gears, Don't you have to set the lash or do you just swap over the gear set with requisite shims and call it good?
Flyinfool Posted August 25, 2013 #12 Posted August 25, 2013 You could just swap out the gears with the shims and it will function as long as it is not binding. BUT, you really should go through the lash adjustment procedure to do it right. The shims, and the lash adjustment procedure are to make up for the manufacturing tolerances of all of the parts. If the lash is not right, it could cause gear noise at best and/or increased gear wear and/or failure at worst. On the other hand, you could get lucky and the shims would be right.
Condor Posted August 25, 2013 #13 Posted August 25, 2013 If you want to swap out the gears I think all V-Max finals will work, but if you plan on using the V-Max case you'll need to make sure it's one of the later styles that have the speedo pick up flat spot in order to drill and tap. Not sure what year they went to the new style casting, but I bet it was '99... maybe??

ACE50 Posted December 9, 2013 #16 Posted December 9, 2013 You need a '96 or later as it has the flat for the speedo. I just milled the hole as the lash setup procedure when swapping gears seemed too much to do. Had it milled pretty quick anyway. I took the ring gear out and just vacuumed the chips so they wouldn't fall inside. Worked great. Love the way the bike accelerates now. Less effort on the engine but hyway speeds are higher, I just cruise at a little slower speed now, not that it matters.
