Broken tab??

Does anyone know of a way to reattach the tab broken from the lower cowl the one by the engine guard. New one is about 200 bucks.

 

Any suggestions?

if its on the plastic then i would use Plastifix. Its a great product and you can get the small repair kit for 30-40 bucks online its great for repairing ABS plastics. Just sand bondo smooth and repaint...then its good as new

Its the tab on the inside of the lower cowl of a RSTD no outside damage I just need to glue the tab back on don't need to paint or anything. Will super glue or something like JB weld work?

Yellow abs cement..the stuff for gluing drain pipes in your house..put on both peices..wigle ,hold good to go

You might want to try the ABS cement from Lowes or Home Depot. I have used it for minor cracks, etc. All out Tupperware is ABS.

I used Plastex (Plastafix) for a similar repair as Joe needs and it sure worked good for me. Can't comment on how it compares to the other suggestions.

Mine was broken in several places. I used JB Weld to put it all together and so far its held up well. Dont be stingy with it.

 

What causes that to break are the gas fumes from the carb vent hoses sitting right near the mount. Over time it deteriorates them. I had to re-route mine.

Well went and got some ABS cement and cemented together looks like a good hold. Will let it set over night and put back on tomorrow and see how it holds.

 

Thanks for all the suggestions and will see if one works.

OK, this is an old subject covered in great detail in many old threads, but it hasn't been addressed in a while, so I'll briefly hit it here. Key points have already been given above.

 

Hardware store plumbing section- plastic pipe- buy a joint cement that is specifically labeled for ABS. If you already have some sitting around, it MUST BE FRESH- that means still runny and clear. Goop up both sides of the broken pieces with plenty of the glue and press them together with a bit of wiggle to mix the melted plastic together, then set aside to cure. That is the most important part- the pieces must cure completely until all traces of solvent have left the plastic- that takes several hours in the hot summer sun or overnight near a heat source in the winter. Once it is cured, this repair will be at least as strong as the original. And the total cost is about $5.

JB weld is good stuff and works on most things, but do not re-route those vent hoses. Proper operation of the CV carbs depends on no heavy air flow by the end of those vents.

No didn't re-route anything. Fixed tab and letting set over night and will install tomorrow.

Well did one of the suggestions and went got some ABS cement applied to tab and cowl last night and let it set over night. Good as new put it back on this morning and all is good. Great bunch of people on this board. Thanks all.

I like to use the abs cement but I will take a small peice of thin metal and bend it to fit in the corner-or any way ya can over the break- then adding more abs cement- making sure that nothing added will interfeer with reattachinment. it makes it so strong that the area repaired will never break again!
