Thanks Squid!

Now.....I've heard about cooling kits for high output stators....what are they and how do they work.

(Please don't anybody say they are a device used to cool the stator and they work pretty good)

The early Ventures, '83 and '84's had a solid bolt that held the flywheel/magnet on the crank. Yamaha devised a kit that had a retaining bolt with a hole in the center of it so it could sling oil over the stator thus keeping it cooler. If I'm not mistaken '85 and up had this stock on the bike, it was just the early ones that had the issues. I had pics of the kit and instructions, but lost it in my last reload of my computer. It's on the site, go to the search bar up top and type in stator cooling kit and it should bring them up.

OK... found it.....I saw where you had considered drilling out the oil hole a little larger. Did you? Would you recommend it?

I did that on the '86 that I just got back on the road. I drilled it larger by probably about half of it's original diameter. Make sure also that you put the ring in the side cover correctly, so that the inner lip is facing inward towards the motor and not outward towards the cover. Another thing I am doing too is I went to Mobil 1 with this oil change. I want to keep it as cool in there as I can and the synthetics tend to run cooler.

I am also going to do it to the '83 I have here today as they one has the stock stator in it.
