Finished the stator up grade last night. I was careful to re-install the starter drive and idler gears back to the way they came off. Even referred to the pics in the tech library. Now at start up there is an horrible noise and vibration when starting. it goes away after about 3-4 seconds but returns as soon as the engine is accelerated.

My fear is that the starter clutch is the cause. The vibration can not be felt where the shafts slide in to the cover but is felt mainly on the removable center cover.

Either way I have to go back in. Any one run in to this after a stator up grade??

I never had that problem, did you check the gears? other thought is that the magnet picked up a bolt or piece of metal and thats makin a noise. If thats the case it could be bad. Personally I would pull and reinspect it.

When replacing the rotor the key in the crankshaft does not always stay in it's rightful home. I have had to remove the rotor a couple of times to make sure the key was properly seated.

If you did not pull the flywheel (there is no need to pull flywheel for stator replacement) then it is unlikely, not impossible, to be something in the starting system.

Check for any debris that may be stuck to the magnets of the flywheel.

Check the stator to be sure that it is actually tight and not just that the screws are bottomed out in the holes.

Check also to be sure the stator is seated properly.

If something was rubbing somewhere in there, you should see rub marks.

Silly question that must be asked, Did you use a new cover gasket or just sealer to put the cover back on? The gasket thickness is needed for proper internal clearances.

2nd that, it's tight tolerances

Got the cover off this morning. Found the stator Phillips screws as tight as I could get them. (even used an impact driver) Stator was slightly loose. I picked up some alen head cap screws, ran a tap down the holes. Ground down the new cap screws so they were 1/8 inch shorter. Installed stator. It is now secure. Just have to wait for a new gasket now.

NOTE: If you are going to change the stator and are going to replace the Phillips screws with cap screws make sure that the head height is no taller than the phillips were. I had to eliminate flat washers with the cap screws to maintain the same head height.
