Huggy Posted August 17, 2013 #1 Posted August 17, 2013 OK I pulled the rear off of my VR. Drive shaft and all. Now how far should I go into the disassembly of it? I need to grease the gears and clean out the oil in the hub. So how do I got about getting at it all. This bike has been sitting for 11 years but nothing is seized nor is it making any noise. On the down side when I drained the oil out of the rear end there was a little bit of water in it and the oil was real nasty looking. Should I be concerned about this? I figure water was due to condensation from sitting so long.
IronMike Posted August 17, 2013 #2 Posted August 17, 2013 If it runs and sounds ok, I would just use chepo gear oil a few times. I would toss a 10Z% dose of Lucas Oil Stabilizer in there each time and when it comes out clean, fill it for the long haul. Yea the water is from sitting, You didn't run it long enough to do any damage. If it aint broke don't fix it.
MiCarl Posted August 17, 2013 #3 Posted August 17, 2013 Do not disassemble any further. Grease the driveshaft splines and wheel splines with molly grease. Reinstall the final drive housing. Easiest time to change the gear oil is with the final drive on the bike and the wheel off.

I cleaned all the little nasty's out of both haves and blew it with air to get rid of them. All the splines are in excellent condition. Going to grease and re assemble. Thanks guys!
