Ventureless Posted August 13, 2013 #1 Posted August 13, 2013 What year R1 Calipers should I be looking for? Here is some that I found this morning. Will they work? http://www.ebay.com/itm/97-Yamaha-YZF1000-YZF1000R-YZF-1000R-R1-Thunder-Front-Brake-Calipers-/200952556234?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2ec9b4aaca&vxp=mtr
Ventureless Posted August 13, 2013 Author #5 Posted August 13, 2013 I see they are sold... Yep. As soon as I read they would work I clicked back on the tab and snagged them!!

Condor Posted August 13, 2013 #8 Posted August 13, 2013 R1 and R6 calipers show up on eBay constantly.... Probably will until they stop wrecking 'm... I've picked up several very nice ones for $35-$45 bucks with a $10 buck shipping fee... Be patient and be picky.

The braided hoses, 14mm m/c, and the splitter. I believe that is it.
Squidley Posted August 13, 2013 #10 Posted August 13, 2013 I got the calipers, now I just need to get everything else. The braided hoses, 14mm m/c, and the splitter. I believe that is it. I have the R1 calipers on my '86 and love them, I just purchased a set of SS brake lines from Skydoc 17 and love them even more. I didn't have to change out the master cylinder, there are plenty of arguments on the site about that either way. They stop excellent and the quality of Earls lines are fantastic. I dont regret spending the money on them as it's that last set of lines I'll buy for this bike. He has a set for the G2's also in the classifieds... http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=4052&title=second-gens-sbrake-2fclutch-5-line-set-21&cat=22
Ventureless Posted August 14, 2013 Author #11 Posted August 14, 2013 So on the Gen2, do I have to change anything else or can I just change out the calipers? I plan on doing the rest, but I will have the calipers by Friday and since I have not ordered or bought anything else yet, I will likely not have them by this weekend. Can I just swap the calipers now until I get everything else?
Guest tx2sturgis Posted August 14, 2013 #12 Posted August 14, 2013 (edited) I swerved into this thread, and it looks very interesting. I didn't know that Skydoc had these kits for sale...I just dont visit the classified section very often. I posted awhile back about upgrading to stainless lines...I think it would make quite an improvement in the brake 'feedback' and feel. My Ural (2WD sidecar motorcycle) has a Brembo front disc brake with a stainless line and its a WHOLE lot better for the feedback, smoothness, and predictable brake feel. I really notice the difference when I get off the Ural and hop immediately on the Venture. Thanks for this thread...altho...it may end up costing me money! Edited August 14, 2013 by tx2sturgis

crowrod Posted August 14, 2013 #14 Posted August 14, 2013 Do you have a link you can post to it? I can't find it. Thanks the one I was looking at has a broken mirror mount, you would not want it ebay has a few available but not at $29.95 look under Yamaha Road Star front master cylinders.
Ventureless Posted August 14, 2013 Author #15 Posted August 14, 2013 Just swap out the calipers and bleed, and you're good to go... Thanks. Hopefully get them on Friday night then.

Thanks. I did finally find that last night. I was under the impression that the master cylinder was also from the R1 and that is why I couldn't find it. I did some more reading here on the upgrade and realized I should have been looking at the Road Star master.

Condor: I see a bunch of front R1 calipers on eBay but I don't know what year will fit my 2008 RSV? Can you advise me?
Condor Posted August 14, 2013 #18 Posted August 14, 2013 Condor: I see a bunch of front R1 calipers on eBay but I don't know what year will fit my 2008 RSV? Can you advise me? The rule of thumb is if the caliper mounts with horizontal bolts it'll work. If the caliper mounts with vertical bolts it won't. The vertical calipers also look kinda boxy... Also none will fit on a 1stGen MKI unless MKII forks are installed.
10spd Posted August 18, 2013 #19 Posted August 18, 2013 so I am confused> I have a 1988 royale is it a 1st or 2nd gen?
Condor Posted August 18, 2013 #20 Posted August 18, 2013 so I am confused> I have a 1988 royale is it a 1st or 2nd gen? 83-93 = 1stGen 99-13 = 2ndGen 83-85 = Mark I = MKI 86-93 = Mark II = MKII
Squidley Posted August 18, 2013 #21 Posted August 18, 2013 so I am confused> I have a 1988 royale is it a 1st or 2nd gen? Yours is a 1st gen and considered a MKII due to it's being the 1300cc. The '83 to '85 are considered a MKI due to them being the 1200cc size. You can install the R1 calipers on the MKII's as they will bolt right on the forks. The MKI's forks are different and they will not work on them.
RSTDdog Posted August 20, 2013 #23 Posted August 20, 2013 I think the calipers that Skydoc uses are the newer style R1 caliper without the small metal brake line connecting the two halves of the caliper. Not sure if there is a performance difference. It seems they get more money for the newer style without the metal line on the caliper body than the older style with it.
