David Hall Posted August 13, 2013 #1 Posted August 13, 2013 I have seen ads for rain-x which is the spray on coating that is supposed to prevent rain from adhering to the windshield I have spoken to folks who use it on their cars but I have not tried it checked the label and it appears to be for glass but not for plastic does anyone here know of a similar product that we could use on our motorcycle windshields for those time that we get caught and want to be able to see while making a dash for it..??
djh3 Posted August 13, 2013 #3 Posted August 13, 2013 I use just spray on detail wax. Alot of folks use pledge. Dont use Rain x. Works well for cars but the bike windshield on bikes dont like it.
Guest divey Posted August 13, 2013 #4 Posted August 13, 2013 You can get Plexus at most m/c shops. Works great as a cleaner, wax and helps shed the rain on the windshield. Doug
Guest tx2sturgis Posted August 13, 2013 #5 Posted August 13, 2013 (edited) Dont use RainX on plastic. It will cause hazing or clouding. Unless its one of those Clearview Shields...I think they are able to be RainXed. Pledge or Favor works good on plastic windshields. And its only a few dollars for a can that will last a season. You can use it on the paint and plastic all over the bike. Great when traveling. Edited August 13, 2013 by tx2sturgis
IronMike Posted August 13, 2013 #6 Posted August 13, 2013 He is right don't use it on plastic. They do make a plastic specific coating that does same thing. Google it. The kind I use is white. Bought at motorcycle show but not home to get the name. Rain magic is one. Anyways be sure it's good for plastic, clean the dog out of it first and do like three coats and carry some with you on a trip. With this stuff on a small spray bottle full of tap water is all you need to clean the wind screen. And same to clean the whole bike when a good wax job is on it. Don't fall for the quick detailers you really don't need em. Water and a micro fiber cloth.
rickardracing Posted August 13, 2013 #7 Posted August 13, 2013 I don't look through my windshield. Mine is short and I look over it. I don't like to look through a windshield, especially when wet, plus at night when headlights hit mine, it would glare and I could not see. To me, that's a safety issue. But I use Honda spray cleaner/wax on the bike and the shorty windshield. Works really good.
Mike G in SC Posted August 13, 2013 #8 Posted August 13, 2013 Dont use RainX on plastic. It will cause hazing or clouding. Unless its one of those Cleaview Shields...I think they are able to be RainXed. Brian, Not Clearview, it's F4 Customs. F4 is the Poly shield. I have both,,, but haven't used RainX. F4 states you can use RainX. Pretty sure Clearview brand says no to RainX. PS: for cars, the RainX premix 2-1 windshield fluid (orange) in WalMart and auto stores is a great product for beading rain on the road. Works almost as good at the rub-on stuff, but reapplies just by hitting the wash button.
MiCarl Posted August 13, 2013 #9 Posted August 13, 2013 National Cycle sells a product called Rain Zip. It does a pretty decent job on my 89 at speeds above 45mph or so. At slow speeds it doesn't help much.
Silverado6x6 Posted August 13, 2013 #10 Posted August 13, 2013 I will be installing a new Slipstreamer windshield on my 89 VR today, I will see what the Yammy shop has for acrylic.
tomephil Posted August 13, 2013 #11 Posted August 13, 2013 The wrong cleaner will break down the coating on an OEM windshield. I use plexus on a clearview windshield. If you have a clearview, check the website. I think they OK rainX. Plexus is expensive but I like it a lot.

I cant keep up with everything...need help now and then...getting old sucks...
darthandy Posted August 13, 2013 #13 Posted August 13, 2013 Yes, Clearview does state that it's OK to use Rain-X on their windshields. I have been using it on mine for over a year and it looks just fine. I tried using pledge but I found that in dusty areas i would get a layer of dust building up on the shield and that would reduce visibility at night. Andy
Guest bodasefus Posted August 13, 2013 #14 Posted August 13, 2013 I just installed a new slip streamer windscreen on my 91 VR... I contacted the dealer and he said that rain-x was ok to use on the SlipStreamer... very nice windscreen and price was right...
Silverado6x6 Posted August 13, 2013 #15 Posted August 13, 2013 The S-104 Slipstreamer is supposed to fit the xvz12 and xvz13 models.

From website: "Can be Polished, Buffed, and is Safe to use Rain-X Original Clear Formula" Sorry, Mike G

syscrusher Posted August 14, 2013 #18 Posted August 14, 2013 I just installed a new Cee Bailey windscreen on my Gen 1.2. It had a sheet attached saying not to use most anything including Windex. It does not mention Pledge but I don't want to ruin it. Anyone else have one of these and recommend anything? BTW, it's about twice as thick as OEM, I had to buy new longer screws to mount it.
Silverado6x6 Posted August 14, 2013 #19 Posted August 14, 2013 I am installing a new Slipstreamer S-104 3/16" thick acrylic crystal clear windshield on my 89 Vr today, and i am using ONLY Pledge until its been confirmed what is truly safe. Too hard to even get a windshield for these older Yammies, actually I am ordering a spare just in case.
djh3 Posted August 14, 2013 #20 Posted August 14, 2013 From my memory banks the issue with windex was the formula with amonia. Amonia is bad for the plastic type windshields. I have been using non-amonia formula window cleaner with no noticable effects. I try to just use clear water but sometimes after being in rain you just have to.
