djh3 Posted August 13, 2013 #2 Posted August 13, 2013 Depends on what you ar comfortable with. The rear is sort of a PIA to change, so I dodnt want to go with something that was going to be out of tread in 5K. My E-3's got me 10K or better. I put a set of Michelein Commander II on as replacements. I have thought about Shinkos but couldnt find any reviews on the tires from bigger bikes. I liked th etread pattern of the Michelein. On my 900 Vulcan I had really good wear from Pirelli RT66. Avons have a good following on this site by some also. Biggest thing is shope arround. Most online stores will price match. I bought several tires from Motorcycle Superstore and have had good service from them. My Michelein's came from Jake Wilson. Dennis Kirk sent me an e-mail the other week for a tire sale. So you just have to poke around and find what you wnt in your price range. Are you going to mount them yourself? Balance? Some shops may charge around $100 to swp tires if you carry in, may be better off buying them locally.
SARNA66 Posted August 13, 2013 Author #3 Posted August 13, 2013 Ill call around tomorrow - I just wanna ride with piece of mind these last 2 months or so. My monet situation will be better in spring.
Shadow walker Posted August 13, 2013 #4 Posted August 13, 2013 I have 01 rsv. I put shinko 230 tourmasters on it shortly after buying the bike. I purchased them at the dealer for $275.00 installed. I've got about a thousand miles on them. I like them, they are smooth on the highway and stick well in the corners. I had them add Ride On to the tires and I have zero vibration. I researched tires a lot before my purchase. I am happy with these tires.
SARNA66 Posted August 13, 2013 Author #5 Posted August 13, 2013 Anyone have success with used? or is that a no-no. seen wheels with tires on ebay
Squidley Posted August 13, 2013 #6 Posted August 13, 2013 Anyone have success with used? or is that a no-no. seen wheels with tires on ebay Dont go used, you never know what they have been through. I will 2nd the Shinko's, they ride well are inexpensive and stick like glue. The mileage I have got with them isn't great, about 8K on the rear of one and the front went close to 13K. This was on a set of the 230 Tourmasters, I have a set of them on an '83 I have right now. I am trying a new set of Shinko's on my '86 the 777. So far I like them, quiet, handle a curvy road great and they cost me less than $170 shipped to my door (I change them myself) I have no issues promoting them and letting folks know the drawback is less mileage out of the tires.....

I get around 18,000 out of my e3s
Silverado6x6 Posted August 13, 2013 #8 Posted August 13, 2013 On my other ride the 2009 Star 1300 Tourer i immediately replaced the stock Dunlops with Metzelers, its a good tire but where i live in Alaska combined with my short riding season and the fact that I actually hate riding that bike even for a 2009 it only has 1750 miles on it, even less on the tires, so they are 4 years old already and with just 1500 miles on them, and they were expensive. But I love my 89 Venture Royale, so I bought a Shinko 230 rear tire for it saturday, should be at the Yammy shop in day or two. Cost me $100 and I will mount it myself, I'm cheating, will put bike up on a forklift to change rear tire. In summary since I put a small amount of miles on a bike per year to me the Shinko was the best deal, and they have a good load rating, V rated for speed. Will also do the front maybe as soon as next week. I already have bought and mounted Shinkos on my 83 Honda CX650, a bit of advice for mounting them, heat them up first. I used a large hot air gun, they are a stiff side wall tire.
Ventureless Posted August 13, 2013 #9 Posted August 13, 2013 I have the Pirelli MT66s on mine now. They replaced the Dunlop E3s and they cost me about $250 for both. I replaced the rear first and then went on a trip. The rear has about 4000 miles on it already and shows no signs or wear at all. I recently replaced the front as well. I have read that the Pirellis don't get that great of mileage. Well the E3 I pulled off the front had plenty of tread left (looks like maybe 3000 miles or so) but it was causing some funny feelings when riding. I constantly checked the pressure in it and the tire looked fine. No funny wear or cupping or anything visible. But when I replaced it with the Pirelli, the bike rode like a dream again. I was planning on going back to the E3 after wearing out the Pirellis, but depending on how long the Pirellis last, I figure why pay more for the E3 when I only get maybe 2000 miles more from them and more money. The Pirellis have done wonderful in all weather conditions and corner well.
buddy Posted August 13, 2013 #10 Posted August 13, 2013 I had the Shinko tour master on my Midnight they give excellent ride grip the twisties and curves really good but I was only getting 9-10,000 mi on rear tire as for the front side I bought another rear tire mounted it on the front give me double the tread and lasted me around 18,000 miles
djh3 Posted August 13, 2013 #11 Posted August 13, 2013 (edited) Bumble Bee, I have seen quite a few comments like yours and I can attest to feeling the simular way with old vs the new tires I installed. My E-3 were good but at the end of life got sort of wiggly in corners and got to howling. The new Micheliens nothing, quite and stable. Then I read a couple posts here that made sense. We are compairing old worn out to brand spanking new, not fair really. Glad to hear your likeing the RT66. I ran them on my 900 Vulcan and liked them quite well. Enough to replace them with the same tires when I wore those out. So on the Shinko looks like what 3 for 1 against? I tried reading for posts concerning the Shinkos on "large" bikes and only found a couple. None had anything bad to say about handeling quality etc. Just the milage being lower than E-3 Commander 2 Avon etc. I think the tourmaster 230 was the one I was looking at. The 777 comes in a wide white wall though dont it? Not for me but some may like them. Here is probably my top 3 places I look for tires. Motorcycle Superstore, Motorcycle tire.com (heve not bought from them as I found cheaper elsewhere) and probably cycle gear as they have a 10% military discount. Edited August 13, 2013 by djh3
Bones Posted August 14, 2013 #12 Posted August 14, 2013 I would not overlook the Kenda line of tires... namely the Kruz. They are sold at a better price point and have a tire they say is made for this kind of bike. I am currently running them and they are a decent tire that will likely outlive the Shenko and not much more in cost. http://www.kendatire.com/en/motorcycle/street/kruz/

My problem with it is that I still had a lot of tread left and they were unbearable to ride anymore. I realize the ride level will decrease with wear, but I expect to at least be able to run it to the wear bars or close to them. Like I said in my opinion, I should have had at least 3000K more miles out of them. So if I can get the same miles from the Pirellis and they cost much less and in my opinion ride and stick in any weather just as good, why not run them. I also have not made it fully through a set of the Pirellis so my tire choice is not a firm one yet. But for the price of the Pirellis, they are worth a try.
Silverado6x6 Posted August 14, 2013 #15 Posted August 14, 2013 I liked the Shinkos so much after I put them on another bike I went back and ordered the front tire yesterday. So they get less than 8,000 miles. like I said on my other post, those new Metzelers the high dollar tires are now 4 years old and yet with only 1500 miles on them, now even with me riding the 89 VR on good days in a short season here in Alaska I still doubt I will go over 2,000 miles a year, so with tire life from 5-7 years I just figure its best to get the best performing and the Shinkos are from molds made by Yokohama, arguably one of the best tire companies globally.
djh3 Posted August 14, 2013 #16 Posted August 14, 2013 Bumble Bee: OK gotcha. I thought they were almost gone and that was your discription. Yea my front had prob at least another 3k left the rear maybe 1500. but the cornering seemed odd, and like I said got really noisy as the rear tread had started a very noticable feathering. LOL almost sounded like snow tires in corners.
Karaboo Posted August 14, 2013 #17 Posted August 14, 2013 I have about 5,000 miles on my set of Shinko tourmasters on a 1st gen and so far they are great. I don't know if they will make it pst 10,000, but for the $140 I paid for the pair, it seems a good deal. They have a good weight rating and are still handling road irregularities and rain better than I expected.
dwatson636 Posted August 14, 2013 #18 Posted August 14, 2013 I have to totally agree with the Kenda Kruz. I had them on my Suzuki Boulevard and am currently putting them on my RSTD. I really like how they handle and the price is right.
van avery Posted August 15, 2013 #19 Posted August 15, 2013 I put Kenda Kruz on my 87 and they are working just fine.
sgn Posted August 15, 2013 #20 Posted August 15, 2013 Kenda Cruz on my 83 VR and my 99 RSV work fine and ride well Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 2
SARNA66 Posted September 1, 2013 Author #21 Posted September 1, 2013 shinko tour master rear was 93.00 and I love it front comes in Wednesday Its amazing the diff, when your tires are round again!! lol
DragonRider Posted September 1, 2013 #22 Posted September 1, 2013 It all depends on how you ride and the air pressure you keep in the tires, I had Shinkos on my 1st gen and my V Star 1300, I got a little over 7500 miles on both rear tires and the fronts were still over 70% left. I rode with max air pressure which I beleive was 75 lbs on the rear tires, and I dont ride hard or fast. Don't put the Shinkos only good for about 3500 miles and I ride easy. I get around 18,000 out of my e3s
SARNA66 Posted September 6, 2013 Author #23 Posted September 6, 2013 Bike rides like a new one with the new tires on it!!!!! I am much more confident and its a dream to ride- however it seems to bounce in the rear more than it should-running 45 lbs of air in the rear.. at 60k is the shock worn out??
