I think I screwed up

Sooo... I think I know what I did wrong but i just wanted to get the opinions of the experts...

 

I tried to tie in half of my vanity lights to the brake lights and it worked for a while but then I saw smoke coming from my dash so I disconnected it. When I opened my CMU I found that one of the solder bridges had burned off the board so I did a little workaround (in the pic) and now my tail lights don’t work but my break lights do.

I hooked the vanity lights up the way shown on the READ ONLY thread (splice in to the brown wire coming from the ignition then run it through a fused lined directly to the lights) but when my bike runs for more than 5 min smoke starts Cumming from the left side by the 1300 plate. Stator?

by the way im looking for a new CMU so if any of you have a working one i am in the market.

What kind of lights are you running?

Or did you short something?

I have an 83 parts bike with a CMU. I don't know if it will work on a 87 ( don't see why not). I'll check it out tomorrow.

what kind of lights are you running? Get your signal wire run it to a relay, fused power from battery to relay to device. Clean install, the wire should be fused close to the battery and fused to the wire size or smaller for device.

Computerized Monitoring Unit. The dohickey between your speedometer and tach that tells you if your sidestand is down, if your oil level is low, battery needs juice, etc.

 

Van Avery, the '83 is the only one that is different than the rest of the years and will only work on an '83...

FYI- you I think added too many lights to a circuit...not designed for this. All accessory lights should be on their own circuit. I have a 6 -spot added fuse block on mine. If it's just a few small lights then connecting the the accessory terminals is fine which has its own fuse.

I have 10 acent lights built in to the trim below the yamaha reflector. I can't remember the bulb size but it's the wedge type. I have since rewired the 6 trunk lights, 10 trim lights, and 2 mudflap lights to a single fused connection but it makes the sator smoke. I'm doing an oil change this weekend so I'm gong to check it out then

The wedge type bulbs are 3 watts each;

 

10 accent lights

6 trunk lights

10 trim lights

2 mudflap lights

28 total lights

 

28 lights at 3W each is 84 watts or 7 amps draw. That is a lot!!!!

Now depending on how much other electrical stuff you have added to the bike, could explain the smoking stator.

You may have to look into a High Output stator and RR and/or change all of those lights over to LED.

its only 18 lights as the trim lights are the same as the ascent lights but i am looking at the superbright website and i think i will convert them all to LED's and save the hassle and the Amps!
