Freebird Posted August 8, 2013 #1 Posted August 8, 2013 The week before leaving for Galena, I ordered two new helmets. Our old Nolan N42 models were getting close to 10 years old and though they still look good, I knew it was time to add a couple of new ones. I did a good deal of searching and there weren't many out there exactly like Eileen and I wanted. I wanted 3/4 helmets with visor, integrated face shield and integrated sun shield. I found a couple but one was almost $500.00 each and the other was about $180.00 but you had to remove the visor to use the shield and etc. I then found these AFX FX-50 helmets. It was one of those cases where they looked too cheap to be any good but the reviews were mostly positive so I decided to give them a try. At $85.00 each, I did not have very high hopes but I can tell you that both Eileen and I were very pleasantly surprised with them. All the features that we wanted and at a GREAT price. They also have ear pockets for your speakers and the finish is as nice as you could hope for. We found them to be very comfortable on our the trip to and back from Galena. If you are looking for a nice 3/4 helmet at what I consider a bargain price, you should check them out. One word of caution. I used their sizing guide to try and determine what size to order. Using their guide, I would have needed to order an XS for Eileen and a medium for myself. Just didn't seem right so I ordered my usual Large and ordered her what they call a S/M. Both fit perfectly. Had I ordered what their sizing chart indicated, they would have both been too small. I bought them from a company that I had never dealt with before. Revzilla. Shipping was free, they shipped the following day and I had them at my house in 3 days. I was so impressed with their service that I've added a banner for them that will rotate with the other banners at the upper right of our site.
Cougar Posted August 8, 2013 #2 Posted August 8, 2013 Thanks for the info Don, We are also looking for new half helmets ourselves you say they have both clear and dark shields together in the helmet? That's a real plus.
Freebird Posted August 8, 2013 Author #3 Posted August 8, 2013 Yes, two separate shields that can be raised or lowered together or separately. Very handy.
Cougar Posted August 8, 2013 #4 Posted August 8, 2013 Thanks. now to figure out what colors Can you guys feel any venting at all on the trip? I have never felt the venting in any other helmet I have owned before when you open the so called vents. with the shield down.
Freebird Posted August 8, 2013 Author #5 Posted August 8, 2013 Maybe some...but as you say...not much. Now if you decide to order them from Revzilla, please use the banner link so that we get some commission on it.
utadventure Posted August 8, 2013 #6 Posted August 8, 2013 Have you added headsets yet? If so, were they prepped or did you have to do alternations? Dave
MiCarl Posted August 8, 2013 #7 Posted August 8, 2013 My previous helmet was an AFX FX-100 (full face). It was quite comfortable and did its job well when I slid down the road on my face. Heck of a deal at $60 (number of years ago) from JC Whitney. Using their sizing guide I ended up with a large, which fits perfectly. I still use it to test ride bikes at the shop where I can leave the gouged face shield up. I replaced it with an HJC IS-16. I'm in an XL and frankly it is tighter than the large FX-100. The ventilation definitely is more effective on my HJC.
BigLenny Posted August 8, 2013 #8 Posted August 8, 2013 Wow! That AFX helmet is cool. It looks a lot like the Bell Mag 9 but for half the price. I wonder if Bell is really any better quality?
Freebird Posted August 8, 2013 Author #9 Posted August 8, 2013 They have pockets for the speakers. Our Edsets speakers fit in them very well with no modifications. I'm not sure if the larger J&M speakers would fit or not but I have to think that they would. To be honest though, we have now removed the speakers from our Edset and use earbuds. They fit fantastic under the helmet also with absolutely NO pressure of any kind and sound fantastic. The Mag 9 was the other one that I was looking at but decided for the price, to give these a try.

Many helmets are made with molds from asia, which tend to have more rounded heads. Jan found Vega and HJC helmets uncomfortable but was finally happy with the Scorpion EXO-900. Fullmers are suppose to be more egg shaped as well. I'm interested in seeing the FX-50. Dave
frodotoo Posted August 10, 2013 #13 Posted August 10, 2013 I bought his helmet last year 'cause I wanted to be able to take a drink or sneak a piece of hard candy on the fly, which was impossible with my full face helmet. I didn't like the fit of the modular helmets I could find in stores so I went with the AFX. Fits fine & I love the flip down sunshield. Cost was a factor as well. I took off the clear shield (Wish I had brought it with on my current trip - would have been a good thing to have in the rain I encountered in WV) and just run with the flip down or glasses. It's a tight fit with the IMC earphones, I just have to bend my ears back up when I put it on. I've got a big head and needed a 2X, but I'm happy with it.
Cougar Posted August 16, 2013 #14 Posted August 16, 2013 My review so far.... Took 5 days ( Friday to Friday ) Received both helmets today wife's fit perfect and mine fits like a small , my head is 23 inches purchased a large ( 23 5/8 to 24) above what it says.... no go.... so I called and RevZilla and the best part is the folks there are so wonderful and helpful. I even told him that he is WAY to nice. and I am not used to customer service like there's in a really long time. Anyways, they sent me a UPS return label and my XL (24 3/8 to 24 13/16 is now on the way. Even though the site says not to buy multiple helmets for the intent on returning one of them but he suggested it to me. Now there will be some figuring out on the head sets as there is only a half pocket so I will have to carve I am sure of it. and do I little mod here and there. this has been like this with any helmet we have owned so far. Will let you know when I get mine and how the heads sets installed. The Quality is pretty darn good on these helmets, LOVE the slide down sun shield and you can also remove the pointy thing in front if you want still undecided on that for now. They are also lighter then the past helmets as well. DOT FMVSS #218 Jeff
AngryAmish Posted August 17, 2013 #15 Posted August 17, 2013 . Now if you decide to order them from Revzilla,. I've ordered from Revzilla , gloves, rain gear, jacket, boots, never had problems with my order, very reliable company and their videos are very thorough
Cougar Posted August 24, 2013 #16 Posted August 24, 2013 So far no new helmet The XL does not fit my head as well. returning today (2nd one) Waiting for the 2XL to be in stock. (silver) So far I have tried the Large, Extra Large. no go. Wife is happy though with hers.
Cougar Posted August 27, 2013 #17 Posted August 27, 2013 Called AFX today and talked to them direct, they say that RevZilla with have my my 2XL in about six weeks in the color I want. that's OK as I have my old one still Did learn something I did notice that the side fit was great in the XL and told the lady I was talking to. she says with the 2XL being that the front and rear of my egg head will fit, she says now order the cheek pads in a XL as the smaller you go on the cheek pads the thicker they are. (great tip) The part number is 0134-1219 for XL Found some on Amazon for the FX-50 for $13 with free shipping. Now to wait for the new helmet :-) So far two returns and it was all a great experience, money credit back with in 5 days from sending back, not bad. no hassle's See you in 6 weeks !
Cougar Posted October 6, 2013 #18 Posted October 6, 2013 OK, so I have waited my 8 weeks or so (more then 6) so I emailed RevZilla And they come back and say the Are not making the FX-50 anymore in this line. So I said just send me the 2XX Large in Pearl White. was waiting for the Silver to come in. only had to pay $3.67 as I told them to keep my return money for when the other color came in for the 2XX. I started with the Large (per there chart) to small Then went to the XL still to small now the 2XX and it fits fine. So my Helmet dilemma is finely over :-) Now to cut this one up for the for the head-sets like I did for my wife's FX-50
