darthandy Posted August 8, 2013 #1 Posted August 8, 2013 I plan on putting some anti-squeal spray on my pads (Just the back of course!). In theory, since the outboard pad has a shim, it shouldn't need any. Should I spray it as well anyway? And if so, do I spray the pad first or after the shim is installed? I searched the forum and found that someone had once asked he same question but never received an answer. I am curious to know. Thanks Andy
djh3 Posted August 8, 2013 #2 Posted August 8, 2013 I think the "shim" your talking about is a thin metal spring sort of piece. Its probably designed to take the rattle or vibration out of the pad/caliper when applying brakes. Simular to an anti-rattle spring on a car. TRW and a few others make some spray on stuff. Lay the pad contact face down on cardboard or something and spray the back, 2 or so light coats is better than trying to goop it on in one. I would do both pads.
darthandy Posted August 8, 2013 Author #3 Posted August 8, 2013 Yes, you're right about the shim. It is supposed to eliminate the squeal but I've seen (heard?) brakes squeal even with these attached. That's why I was wondering if I should spray both pads. However, since the "shim" rides against the pistons, I wondered if I should spray the back of the shim as well. Andy
Marcarl Posted August 8, 2013 #4 Posted August 8, 2013 Just file a small 45 degree angle on the leading edge of the pads,,, problem solved!
CaptainJoe Posted August 8, 2013 #5 Posted August 8, 2013 (edited) Or just buy HH sintered brake pads. The harder OEM pads will glaze your rotors. I know they glazed mine... Edited August 9, 2013 by CaptainJoe
Globewalker Posted August 8, 2013 #6 Posted August 8, 2013 i have tried the anti squeal stuff (dont recall if I also applied on the shim) but still have the squeal may need to try the 45 degree angle trick
darthandy Posted August 9, 2013 Author #7 Posted August 9, 2013 Well, I had already bought the EBC HH pads and I put a bit of a bevel on the pads (I'm not really good at doing that so I didn't want to overdo it.). And then, I put the anti-squeal spray on the backs of each pad and the shim. If the brakes squeal now (Which they did badly before I put some anti-squeal on the old ones) then I'll resort to turning up the volume on the radio! Thanks everyone for the ideas and advice. Oh yeah ... I gave the calipers as good a cleaning as I could with some Q-tips, cleaner and a toothbrush. Now we'll see. Just have to flush and bleed the system tomorrow. Andy
dacheedah Posted August 9, 2013 #8 Posted August 9, 2013 Clean the pin very well and a lite coat of antiseize on it. That will let the pads move smooth. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
