I just received a new re-conditioned Garmin nuvi 2555 GPS, it seems to work OK, but I have had it hooked up to my lap top for nearly two days trying to get the maps updated, the firmware upates and a couple of other updates, I get to the Garmin Express page and select the upgrades and it just sits there with two or three scrolling bars showing that it doing something, but it never gets done and under each scrolling bar it says waiting for other updates to complete.

Anybody else have this issue with other Garmin products?

Thanks

Yeah, that happens with my 2555 as well. I usually terminate the load and do it again the next day and then everything goes smoothly. It usually shouldn't take more than 15 to 30 minutes to complete a download. This seems to be a problem with their site.

Garmin updates are painfully slow and take forever. They are not much faster even if you order the CD/DVD updates. The units themselves seem to be part of the reason for the slowdown. I have used other brands of GPS and slightly prefer the Garmin units for their presentation on the screen. The downloads will depend on the speed of the "sending" site, but it is possible (though not likely) that your internet connection is slowing things down. Go to speedtest.net or speedtest.org and do a check on your end of the system. It only takes a couple of minutes. Also be advised that if you are using a router/wireless connection, that a lot of routers have a problem releasing memory that they have been using. This drops your download speeds dramatically and will require resetting the router. To reset the router simply unplug the power for about 15-30 seconds, reconnect the power and let the router go through its sequence. Do a speed test before and after doing the reset to see if that is the problem. My router (Linksys WRT160 Version 3) is one of the routers in question. I would literally have to reset the router just before any download of any size at all. Comcast inadvertently corrected the problem by sending me a new modem/router combination. My speed now remains stable at about 30mbps. Wireless will usually be noticeably slower than an Ethernet cable connection also.

As for the other downloads you mentioned, be sure that if you are using Windows to ensure all updates (every 2nd Tuesday of the month Microsoft issues any updates necessary) are done and completed. You may have updates waiting to be completed and/or installed.

Garmin's update process is user hostel, painful, agonal and failure prone. Little excuse for such a terrible update process considering what you pay for their products. This market is in serious need of a strong competitor. ie they suck. If it wasn't for their excellent tech support to bail them out I'd be using another manufactures GPS.

Thanks all, I thought maybe it was just me or a defective unit, but seems to be a common issue. The whole affair is not overly user friendly for the first time user, I think I have what I need for an up coming trip to Dallas, so I can navigate around with out getting lost to badly.

Thanks again, I have pinged Garmin tech support , I will let you know if anything shakes out of that.

The 2555 is a bit low on memory, ( I have one also) so it takes awhile for the system to upgrade.

A couple of hours on a normal broadband connection should be adequate...2 or 3 days...no...
