OK I'm going to remove the exhaust from my 86 VR and is there anything I need to know or beware of before I do this? I'm not taking off the headers I just want to get the collector box off for a repair. Looks like PO burned a hole through the pipe trying to re-weld the tab from the chrome side cover back on.:backinmyday:

I never had mine off but I seem to remember that there is a mounting bolt right in the middle of the collector that you can not see.

I don't know if the collector will come off without taking some other pipes off first.

Thanks Flyinfool for the heads up well I'm going to give it a try and see if I can do it with out taking off the mufflers. If not I'll be buying lots of gaskets!:backinmyday:

That's good to hear BUT these have been on and sitting for the last 11 years out in the rain and snow under a tarp! So I'm not too optimistic on how they may look once I pull it a part.:backinmyday:

You will have to remove the mufflers.. But if you loosen the clamps enough it should be no problem pulling them off. Basically they are slipons. There are two nuts on the bottom that are tucked up way out of sight that need to come off. These hold the collector to the frame. You may have to loosen the front pipes as well because I don't think there is enough room to pull the collector off the front pipes without dropping it a bit.. There are also two top pipes that need to be loosened to drop the collector off the rear pipes.. Sometimes these can be difficult.

Wayne nothings ever easy is it! Oh well guess I'll head out to the garage and see what I can do. Just don't want to have to replace all those exhaust gaskets!:backinmyday: If I have to get new ones I'll get them in Brantford and then go bug Marcarl for a while!:rotf:

ya i just did a full exaust last week and to remove the collector the front pipes have to come off as well as the mufflers, the two bolt holing the rear pipes can be reached with long extensions by angling them up under the frame and are a pita to get at. and the two bolt that hold the collector to the engine are at the front of it between where the front pipes go into it

OK I got the exhaust off going to replace the collector. Ordered a replacement off of Ebay. Also how hard is it to get the REAR exhaust pipes off of the engine? I would like to have good look at them to se if they need replacing.:backinmyday:

You have already done the hard part.. Getting them off the engine is easy.. Just two clamps.. and they will almost fall out. (actually two pipes but one unit)

Going to remove the rear exhaust pipes today. I found the worst part to be getting the nuts off the collector, well actually the one on the right side any way. It was a bit*ch to do!:backinmyday:
