Eddy Posted February 20, 2008 #1 Posted February 20, 2008 Can someone tell be how to take off the grips that come on the 2007 Venture. I want to put the Kuryakin grips on and the local stealer wants $80.00 to install them and I believe I can do it as long as I don't mess anything up getting them off. Thanks, Eddie
Squeeze Posted February 20, 2008 #2 Posted February 20, 2008 Undo the Bar Ends, lift the Grips with a smaller Screwdriver and blow compressed Air in the Gap you crated with the Tip of the Screwdriver. Move the Screwdriver around the Bar, maintaining the slightly lifting Position. Once youre aorung the Bar and see the Grip moving put the nozzle of the Airgun in the Gap and turn the Grip with the other Hand. Borrow your Managers Hairspray Can and use it to glue the new Grips in Place. Check the Grips, they have different Diamter inside. The larger Diameter goes on the right Side on the Throttle.
rod Posted February 20, 2008 #3 Posted February 20, 2008 To remove the bar weights take a knife and pry off the caps in the middle of the weights, then remove the allen screw in the middle of the weights, then unscrew the bar weights. On the left side to save grips, take a small screwdriver and pry up the rubber grip and spray some WD40 or whatever penetrating oil with a long tube you have around, loosen as much as you can with the screwdriver and shoot some compressed air and the rubber should come off with a little twisting and pulling. Quick way to not save the grip cut with razor knife. Use the spacer that comes with the grips to support the end of the new grips rubber. Right side, pull the screws that hold the throttle housing together and disconnect the throttle cables, if your new grips are complete with cable sleeve. If it is just the slip over type to pull the rubber use the same technique as the 1st side but be aware that there are ridges that keep the grip from slipping so it is harder to get off in one piece. Easy way again is razor knife and cut it off. I use hair spray as the glue to hold the new grips in place. It lubes when wet and sticks when dry. Good luck Rod
SaltyDawg Posted February 20, 2008 #4 Posted February 20, 2008 I use the WD-40 method and the hair spray. A word of advise on the hair spray though, be careful in the rain because it will loosen the hold and the grip will spin and can come off if pulled. Once it drys again everything is fine.
kantornado Posted February 20, 2008 #5 Posted February 20, 2008 Taking old grips off and adding the Kuryakin grips are pretty easy. The guys gave a pretty good description of how to get the old grips off. Here are some pictures I took to kinda help out a little. I already have mine on but it gives a idea and the direction you will need to turn the weight. (my finger pointing) I wished you where closer we could of did it together and taken pictures to post here for the next person. When I took my old grips off I did not take the end piece off with a screwdriver. I used a rubber oil filter remover and strapped it on the weight and twisted toward the fairing and it started spinning off. The 3rd pic is of the threaded end that the weight goes into. If you would like to ad the weights to the end of your handle bars, That is a little more involved, but can be done................Ron 1. Direction of twist on end weight finger points in direction. 2. twisting weight off 3. look at threads on end of handle bar 4 to 8. twisting grip of L to R while pulling 9 & 10 sliding new grip on
Eddy Posted February 21, 2008 Author #6 Posted February 21, 2008 Thanks a lot for the info. You guys are a tremendous help!!! Eddie
Guest black knight Posted February 22, 2008 #7 Posted February 22, 2008 Did any of you guys put your bar weights back on, i understand this takes a little work, if not, is there a big difference without the weights? Patrick.
Carbon_One Posted February 22, 2008 #8 Posted February 22, 2008 I just changed out my handlebars for Flanders so had to reinstall my Kurykyn grips. Here's a couple of suggestions I haven't seen others mention. 1. mount up your right side throttle grip first. Once you get that on and the cables adjusted then your ready to do the left side. 2. On the left side position your grip the same as the right side is. It'll not only look better but feel the same. Also there'll be a small gap on the right side. Even thou the left grip could go up tight to the switch housing I prefered it to have the same space between the switch housing and grip. I used a super glue for my left grip much like Kurykyn uses. Larry
Sleeperhawk Posted February 22, 2008 #9 Posted February 22, 2008 Did any of you guys put your bar weights back on, i understand this takes a little work, if not, is there a big difference without the weights? Patrick. I did not put the OEM bar weights on with my grips, but found during the ride home a little bit more vibration. I bought and put on the Kurykyn bar weights. No more vibration.
ahoutzer Posted February 22, 2008 #10 Posted February 22, 2008 I put the original bar-end weights back on, with the k'akyn grips. I just liked the original weights. It required some work with a Dremel tool on the throttle-side grip. Also, because the weight could not be screwed all the way back in tightly (it would have locked the throttle), I used some blue locktite on the threads of the weight.
kantornado Posted February 23, 2008 #11 Posted February 23, 2008 This is from a previous post I did last year. I just put the Kuryakyn Grips on my 02 and here is what I did. 1st. Pulled end weights off and took old grips off. 2nd. Took allen end screws and rubber out of new grips and wrapped chrome with masking tape. Machined out the hole on back of Kuryakyn Grips to .860 thousandths to fit end weights. 3rd. Put rubber back in grips and put left side on with end weight and tightened.(slid right on) 4th. Right grip would not go on (throttle to tight-rubber would fold up) Trimmed .120 thousandths off of throttle with Dremel tool. 5th. Used liquid soap to help slip grip on. 6th. Made a bushing out of aluminum .760 thousandths O.D /.620 thousandths I.D /.670 thousandths Long that threaded itself on throttle weight to give .040 thousandths clearance so throttle would rock back on its own. Then thread weight on right side and your done. That is how I got mine on or they would not fit. After I started I wondered if I should of, but they look great and I like the Throttle weights that the VENTURE has. Hope this helps I know I should of took pictures but forgot til I had already finished. All the dimensions are there and step by step instructions...................................... .......Ron Now the pictures above are from the left side and I will pull my right side and take pictures of the right (throttle side) so you can see the bushing and it really is easy to do and the weight tightens up real tight and throttle rocks back real nice.........................Ron O.K. just finished uploading pictures of throttle side, Finger pointing in direction to twist off weight. You don't need to be as technical as I was just a piece of aluminum tubing ( or copper or ??)that slides over threaded end and is long enough to give you throttle play. The measurements are there and it works really swell on my 02. I used a plumbing tube cutter to cut the aluminum. Hope this helps you guys out........Ron 1. Direction to twist of throttle side (finger pointing) 2 & 3. Aluminum tube and how it slips over shaft. 4 & 5. end of handlebar and threads 6. Gap in between throttle and weight to show how far in it goes, theres lots of threads.
kantornado Posted February 25, 2008 #12 Posted February 25, 2008 Maybe this should be saved somewhere and people can axcess it better?? I could copy and paste left & right and make another thread..........................Ron
Freebird Posted February 26, 2008 #13 Posted February 26, 2008 Great articles. I copied them to the tech library. Thanks.

Do they go on the end of the grips like the OEM ? Jerry
