Okay boys and girls and 1st Gen Gurus... does an 84 MKI use the same right side brake pads as a MKII 87/89 front right ? I know there is a rotor difference, just thought I would check on the pads...

Inquiring minds want to know..... :confused24:

I know, I know. You're just checking on pad fit. But.......if it even crossed your mind of changing the '84 over to MKII forks and Blue Dot calipers.........let me know.

Just thinking ahead for ya. :thumbsup2:

I need pads for my 89 and if I remember correctly, one of my 84 parts bikes has really good pads on it..so, I was just hoping ....:confused24:

I even checked my 87 and the same outer pad wear on that one. The inner pads seem ok. Thinking of getting one new set and putting one new pad on the outer side of each bike. Then the inner and outer pad should wear out at the same time. I had read that the outer pad wears faster, and this proves it (X2) for me.

Bill, is there enough pad left on the worn ones to swap inside pad for outside pad?

But, I am also suspecting an issue with the calipers. The four piston MKII calipers don't slide back and forth like the MKI calipers with just a single piston. In fact, the MKI pads did wear unevenly, but the MKII pads should not show different wear since all four pistons should move equally.

Clean the pistons and clean and lube the pad supporting pins to ensure equal application on both pads.

No, swapping isn't a possibility. The outer one is ready to go metal to metal. The outer on my 87 is almost identical. I was just trying to save a few $$ right now since I have a big expensive surprise for my wife this weekend for our 30th anniversary.

Flying my daughter and grand daughter in and my son down from where he lives to get the family together.. wifey been suffering from empty nest/missing grand Princess syndrome. Trying to keep it all a secret is exhausting. Bike shop in town has a set for $28.00.

I will clean and grease up the pins etc though, thanks.

heard that if you grease the pads real well, they last a long, long time.... :sun:

Unless your's are different, my MK1 calipers are solidly mounted, with a single piston on each side of each caliper (making it a dual piston?) so I really haven't noticed uneven wear. Maybe one of the pistons is sticking. Now my Maxim is a single piston caliper that pivots around a bolt, but it still doesn't wear unevenly...

Well I temporarily cheated and took the inside one off the 87 and used the existing inside on the 89 and put the bike back together. I'll buy a set for the 89 soon and put these back on the 87. I'll get new ones for the 87 if I ever get the carbs rebuilt and back on it..
