i know, i know, done a search on this and found a lot different opinions. my 84 whines the loudest @55mph, gets quieter around 60mph,complety stops when i pull in the clutch on the highway.according to the po's service records the transmission was rebuilt at 46,751 miles it now has 53,384. any ideas? thanks in advance!

Primary gear noise is not speed dependent, it's RPM dependent. If it's the primary gear noise it'll do it in neutral.

 

If the bike has to be in gear it'll be something in the drive line.

It might just be trying to imitate a 2nd Gen owner.... whine..whine..whine...usually at lower speeds since they don't go that fast to begin with... :sun:

Not sure if it the same kind of "whine", but mine does it too. Mine is what I refer to a a "whistle trill". It sounds like someone is blowing lightly on a whistle, and no matter what gear I am in, it does it at 3000rpm.

One thing that I have had on several bikes is a "whine" that is caused by the tires. If you "swerve" back and forth, to where the tire is off of the center, the noise momentarily goes a way until you are back straight. Long shot, but mine does it now with the tires I have.
