y2krider Posted July 30, 2013 #1 Posted July 30, 2013 I stumbled on this site a few weeks back and started looking around. Found some threads about using Road King mufflers on the Venture. I picked up a set Friday at a local shop for $35 and installed them Saturday. Installation was simple thanks to a picture of a mounting bracket on one of the posts here (I had a nice piece of 1/4" aluminum that had been laying around just waiting for a bike ride) and the muffler expander from the Autozone loan a tool program. They sound great. Just enough growl without being too loud. I do have one question for those who may know more about HD mufflers than I do, what does the baffle structure look like in a stock bagger muffler? When I look into these from the tail end I see about 4 inches of pipe perforated with small holes and closed on the other end. When I look in from the header end it is just one large open chamber with the afore mentioned pipe in the other end. Is this stock or has someone removed part of the baffle system?
SilvrT Posted July 30, 2013 #2 Posted July 30, 2013 Based on the RKs I had, there are 3 baffles in each muffler I can't recall how far in they are tho.

I have a set of Harley Touring mufflers from around '05 that have no Catalytic converters in them. The main problem is that I believe on the right side muffler had a converter in it, the left did not. There was much discussion around whether this made an appreciable difference or not. See link below for some of that discussion. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=31439 Others I'm sure will chime in, kinda of like an oil or tire thread.
djh3 Posted July 30, 2013 #4 Posted July 30, 2013 (edited) The other pair I had, the innards sound as you have sdiscribed. One side you could look almost to the end and the other when looking in from the engine side was only a few inches. You can do some research around here and find the "good" part numbers. I picked up a pair off a 2012 Street Glide I think. Slash cut rears. I know no cats because after like 08 or 09 there EPa figured no one was leaving factory muffs on and there by defeating the catalitic converter. OK did a little research for ya. Hillis said: You want "non-catalyst" mufflers. They need to be off a HD Touring Bike (Road King, and many other models). You can use other mufflers with the catalyst (I have) and these will be what your HD dealer will have as they are on the newer HD's. Or you can look around, (craigslist, eBay, etc) for pipes taken off an older HD (new take offs are out there) without the catalyst. Here are the P/N's (part numbers) you are looking for.... They will end with the following numbers if they are non-catalyst mufferls off a touring HD. 95 95a 98 or 98a Make sure you check the P/N's on BOTH mufflers If the pipes end with a P/N of "07"... they ARE catalyst mufflers. Now, this wont matter if you remove the catalyst for drill straight through the mufflers. The part numbers on mine are 64900016a on the drivers rt, 65592-09a on lt. Non-cat slash cuts.
