Want to say Hi !

My name is David (aka Summer Breeze). I never put much stock in claims of "Barn Finds" until now. Last week I found and bought a 1996 Royal Star Touring Classic. The guy I bought it from said it had around 1200 miles on it and it had been sitting in a shed for the last ten years. When I got it home and hooked up the battery charger, turned on the key and the OD reads 987. It needs some work, front and rear calipers are frozen up as well as the master cylinders, battery has to be replaced, clutch master cylinder will not pump fluid, throttle will not rotate and I am sure the carbs will have to be rebuilt at the very least. I am new to the worls of Royal Stars and have not been on a bike since I sold my Gold Wing seven years ago after Heart Surgery. Would appreicate any guidance as to best place to buy parts and get feed back on just buying a set of used carbs in bolt on condition. I wold post pictures if I knew how. Any and all help would be very appreicated. Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum here you will find the most helpful people to help you and I would suggest going to the tech talk forums and you will find all kinds of help but if you just ask we will be glad to help. I have a Kawi Voyager and previously had 1st Gen Go fast Ventures so I couldn't help you here but welcome. Oh and welcome to the funnyfarm.....

David, welcome to the site. Sounds like you have some work to do. You may not get to many responses this week as most everyone is at our International Rally in Illinois. Don't let that deter you, check out our tech section and do some reading. Lots of info and when everyone gets back, just ask and you will get your answeres.

Carbs can be found on EBAY, Pinwall cycle salvage has a lot of parts available. I would replace all the hoses, brake lines, clutch lines and flush the cooling system. You have a lot of work ahead of you. Don't hesitate to ask for help. Good luck. :thumbsup2:

Dump a can of seafoam into a half of gallon of gas. Pull the feed off the tank and put it into the mixture. Turn on the key and let the fuel pump fill the carbs with it if it will. Let it sit for a couple of days then fill the tank with gas and try to start it. You may not have to do anything to them.

Welcome to the group. Good luck with your barn find. Just start working the issues and shorthly you will have nice ride. After that long you brake fluid is most likely turn into a gel. Plan on cleaning out everything and rebuilting the calipers. Some times it hard to get the pistions out. If your using air pressure put a block of wood to retain it when it moves it can shoot out with quite a force. I've had a couple that I needed to set up a master cylinder to pressure them out.

Today was a good day. I got the oil and filter changed as well as the final drive lub. I will try the seafoam/gas solution as recomemded. I also removed the right front caliper and took it apart , cleaned it and put it back on. Hopefully tomorrow I can get the left front and rear done. A bit of good news I pulled the plugs last Wednesday and put some Marvel Mistery oil in each cylinder. I did not have time until today but when I hooked the charger up and hit the start button the starter spun the engine with very little effort. I will do a compression check as soon as I finish the items I have started. Can someone advise as to what the compresion should be on each cylinder. Thanks for the replys.
