Yama-Trunk light

Has anyone here purchased one of those (not so cheap) spoiler-type trunk lights for a 2nd gen.

If so, how easy does it mount, how well does it work and most important, what do you think of it?

I have one on my bike. Was on it when I bought it. Looks good. Paint doesn't exactly match, but close enough. I like having the extra lighting. Only problem is what do you do when those leds start burning out? As far as I can tell, there's no way to replace the bulbs.

It comes with a do it yourself template of sorts. It's not particularly hard to mount, but it does take a bit of nerve to start poking holes in the trunk. I followed the instructions from the measure twice drill once school of thought. It came out fine.

 

You think not so cheap now, wait until you paint it. Yamaha is always several years behind on the colors. Either you wait, or do it yourself. I got a can of ColorRite paint and had a local shop paint the wing and a Wagner Grille. Paint and labor for two parts cost over $400. They do look fantastic, though.

 

The lights are in a plastic tube that uses double stick tape to attach it to the inside of the wing where the slot is. If they start burning out they could be replaced, though I have no idea with what right now. There's certainly no aftermarket replacement bulb for something as obscure as this, though individual bulbs are easy enough to get. Hopefully that won't be a problem. They quote huge life expectancy numbers for LEDs.

 

I attached a Back Off module to the wing light and set it up to flash all the time the brakes are on. It works great.

 

The only thing I'm not totally pleased about the light is that the individual LEDs are not all pointed in the exact same direction. There's a very slight spiral to them - just a couple of degrees. That means if you stand behind the bike and look at the light the left side is a little brighter than the right. Until you move forward. The closer you get the further to the right the really bright patch moves. After thinking about this a bit I realized that this aims a portion of the light at the cage behind me no matter how close he is. Now I don't mind.

 

Overall I'm extremely happy with mine. It not only looks good, but it looks right on the bike. A small price to pay to have the most beautiful bike around.

I can't say how easy it is to mount, but a friend of mine has one and the lights are so dim as to be almost nonexistent during the day when riding behind him I have to look hard to see if they are even on. They are ok at night, but really could do with some high intensity LED to make them show up better.

 

Personally if you are looking for more lighting there are a lot more cheaper and better ways of doing it.

I helped a friend mount a trunk rack on his Ultra Glide. It mounts with 4 screws. I told him if we had to drill 4 holes I'd charge him 100 bucks, if we drilled 6 it would be $50 and If we had to drill 8 it was free!

I agree with SaltyDog, the light looks good but not to bright especially for the price. You can get a much more visable light to go under the Tour Box much cheaper.

Mounted mine with no big problem, took my time and was careful with measurements. Not sure about the comments about brightness, I think mine is bright enough for the day time and very bright at night.

It was real easy! I had the dealer put it on, they charged me $35.00 and it works perfect!

I put one one. I just set it on the trunk, moved it around till it looked good, & traced it lightly with a pencil. Drilled the holes, ran the wire, and presto, it was done. The only thing I should've done different is spliced the wires closer to the trunk rather than run them to where they tell you to hook up. I barely had enough wire!

i added one to an 06 black cherry venture, after getting it painted the correct color it was very easy to install,came with a template and very good instructions. it works very well and adds a new measure of safety as a brake light steve
