cruiserfan Posted February 20, 2008 #1 Posted February 20, 2008 I have noticed recently a whine coming from the rear end when going through left curves. It seems most noticable when the bike is in 4th and 5th gear. I do not hear it when going through right hand curves. I have read about clicking noises in earlier posts but this is a loud whine. I also am certain that it is not the tranny whine you hear on metric bikes. Anyone got any ideas? Is it a bad bearing? I have not been able to get to the shop yet to have it checked out.
flb_78 Posted February 20, 2008 #2 Posted February 20, 2008 Are you sure it's not just tire whine? What brand of tires are you running?
Freebird Posted February 20, 2008 #3 Posted February 20, 2008 That would be my first thought also. Some brands REALLY whine when you get them off dead center. Bridgestone is very bad about it and even my Michelins do it a bit.
SaltyDawg Posted February 20, 2008 #4 Posted February 20, 2008 Yeah more than likely the tires. Check your air pressure, sometimes they will whine when low but for the most part all tires will whine some when they are worn down.
debelt Posted February 20, 2008 #5 Posted February 20, 2008 I have a whine in between 50-60 mph, but attribute it to the "straight cut gears" in these bikes.
Yammer Dan Posted February 20, 2008 #6 Posted February 20, 2008 I used to have a whine from the rear. Divorced that one but would like to have someone to ride with. A little whine is better than none at all.
cruiserfan Posted February 20, 2008 Author #7 Posted February 20, 2008 Tires eh? I never thought of that. I have the Yammy original Bridgestone tires on and have just over 7000 miles on them. I know that is not alot of miles but with being down for a couple surgeries and the rain last summer, it was the best I could do. Thanks for the info.
Freebird Posted February 20, 2008 #8 Posted February 20, 2008 I think you just answered the question. The Bridgestones can be VERY noisy. At the end of last summer, I had just about worn out my Michelin on the rear. Another member here had a Bridgestone with only a couple of thousand miles on it that he gave to me. Actually, it was the wheel that I wanted, he has converted to a trike, and the wheel happened to have the Bridgestone on it. I truly do HATE that tire. The noise drives me crazy. It will be coming off before riding weather.
SilvrT Posted February 20, 2008 #9 Posted February 20, 2008 I had a similar whine...it disappeared when I changed the tire. Avon venom X's before and after...strange tho, the one I replaced really wasn't worn out.

I could not believe how much quieter mine got after changing from Brickstones.
dharnie Posted February 22, 2008 #11 Posted February 22, 2008 Guys (& gals!) If you put the fish tail straight pipes on you will never notice the whinning either from the tires, clutch box or the whinner on the pass seat - until she slaps you on the helmet because you are whinning out the bike in 3rd gear and hittin 90+ LOL!
geresti Posted February 22, 2008 #12 Posted February 22, 2008 I had the same problem on my factory bridgestones and when I changed the front tire at about 6k it stopped. It was actually more like a moan than a whine. http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/5/5_2_110.gif http://www.smileycentral.com/sig.jsp?pc=ZSzeb096&pp=ZNxmk393BBUS
