Ok so lately I have encountered this little gremlin since I left Tail of the Dragon.

The kick stand indicator (& blinking red light) stay on even after I lift up the side stand.

If I slam it up it sometimes shuts off or while riding it will shut off eventually.

Either way the bike starts up normally in neutral (whether the stand is up or down)

So...is this a bad switch or a dirty switch?

The bike should start normally with the stand up or down.

The question is does the bike continue to run after you put it in gear and with the side stand is still down?

Yes it does. Actually it always has. I can recall pulling out with the side stand DOWN & smacking it up!

OK, that is not right.

Try unplugging the side stand switch and see if that makes any difference in either the dash display or whether the bike will run when you put it in gear.

Then connect all 3 pins of the switch connector together on the bike side of the connector and again see if that makes a difference in either the display or running.

Well the indicator issue turned out to be the rubber boot wasn't letting the pin work right. I fixed that now the indicator is working...although I can still shift into 1st with the sidestand down & it won't shut off the engine.

Hmm Do I have to let out the clutch for that to cut off the engine?

Yes, under those circumstances, letting the clutch lever out will cause the engine shut-off function (safety interlock) for a system working properly .

On my 83, if I am sitting in 1st gear, clutch pulled in, put down kick stand, it dies.

That is correct. It should never run or start if it's in gear or the side stand is down.

Yup!! The usual sidestand switch failure is the bike dies when you put it in gear AND you let the clutch out. Even a few ohms rather than zero ohms causes this!! Mine read 8 ohms instead of zero.

Your problem may be in the CMU needing soldering...
