pmelah Posted July 24, 2013 #1 Posted July 24, 2013 my girlfriends daughters car is having problems that i just cant figure out the problem is it wants to die or it idles up to 2k rpm when she drives it ...it will also surge and shake when driving it until it shift gears then will take off does any one have any suggestions i have already changed the fuel filter and air filter last night starting with the cheapest fix my next guess would be mass air flow sensor
GAWildKat Posted July 24, 2013 #3 Posted July 24, 2013 I'm no car expert here and my caprice is a different animal to those foreign cars...but could be the MAF and when my car acted similar it was also time for new plugs and wires. If she drives down alot of dirt roads that will kill the MAF quick.
Guest Posted July 24, 2013 #4 Posted July 24, 2013 Sounds like a throttle body cleaning is in order. Bet its pretty gummed up on there and along the edges of the butterfly.
bongobobny Posted July 24, 2013 #5 Posted July 24, 2013 Do you get any "check engine" codes? If no error codes I'd go with Ruffy's suggestion first...
GAWildKat Posted July 24, 2013 #6 Posted July 24, 2013 Do you get any "check engine" codes? If no error codes I'd go with Ruffy's suggestion first... Agreed, the MAF throws a code when it fails...if you need a new one, look on ebay 1st, I got mine for the caprice alot cheaper there than the automotive places want.
pmelah Posted July 24, 2013 Author #7 Posted July 24, 2013 yea i was thinking that to about a good cleaning she doesn't ride down a lot of dirt roads but i suggested she get me some new plugs and wires so i could change them.. i haven't looked at the MAF to see if it was dirty i will check it and clean or replace if necessary
pmelah Posted July 24, 2013 Author #8 Posted July 24, 2013 no check engine light but that's not to say it doesn't have one stored i will check it with my OBD II scanner

Flyinfool Posted July 25, 2013 #11 Posted July 25, 2013 I have had bad MAF that did not throw a code, just stopped running with no clues.
