Huggy Posted July 23, 2013 #1 Posted July 23, 2013 OK I need to replace the speakers on my 86 VR what can I use? The old ones are rotted out!!!
cimmer Posted July 23, 2013 #2 Posted July 23, 2013 I used a Pioneer 4" speaker I picked up from Best Buys years ago. Not sure if they even make them still. The key is for them to be 4 inch speakers and waterproof cant hurt either. Do a search and you should find some old threads on this subject. Hope that helps Rick F.
slowrollwv Posted July 23, 2013 #3 Posted July 23, 2013 Polk DB104 they are water proof and sound very good.
Snaggletooth Posted July 23, 2013 #4 Posted July 23, 2013 Polk DB104 they are water proof and sound very good. yep, that seemed to be the popular choice a while back. That name kept coming up.
Prairiehammer Posted July 23, 2013 #5 Posted July 23, 2013 Polk DB104 they are water proof and sound very good. I'm pretty sure it wasn't that speaker. That Polk speaker is/was a 10" subwoofer. Polk currently offers a 4" marine speaker, model DXi400. http://www.polkaudio.com/products/dxi400
Huggy Posted July 23, 2013 Author #7 Posted July 23, 2013 Yes I'm going with marine speakers. 4 inch will hit the local marine shop. Cannot find local dealer for the recommended speakers. So I'll have to have a good look.

Huggy Posted July 23, 2013 Author #9 Posted July 23, 2013 I can not find a local dealer for the DB401. The old speakers where Pioneer forget what ones but they where not marine speakers.
stickhandle2 Posted July 23, 2013 #10 Posted July 23, 2013 For my 86, I used Kicker 4" speakers, they sound great, they were model CS4. Even better bought them at the local Future Shop here in Hamilton.
cabreco Posted July 23, 2013 #11 Posted July 23, 2013 I replaced the ones on my 84 with a set I found at Walmart. They've been in there for a year & a half with no problems. They have been in rain & still sound good ESPECIALLY for the $16 price! http://www.walmart.com/ip/Scosche-HD4303-4-3-Way-Car-Speakers-Car-Speakers-Pair-of-Speakers/17128650 http://i.walmartimages.com/i/p/00/03/39/91/03/0003399103261_180X180.jpg
Huggy Posted July 24, 2013 Author #12 Posted July 24, 2013 Sooooooo many choices!!! It's going to be hard to decide!
Black wing Posted July 24, 2013 #13 Posted July 24, 2013 water proof really isnt required as long as the grill is still there, ive got 4'' alpines in it and will soon be upgrading to 5 1/4" speakers soon, though this can only be done it you have gutted all the venting from under the fairing as the new brackets takes up where the vent used to be
JohnT Posted July 24, 2013 #14 Posted July 24, 2013 I have 4 Polk DB401's in my fairing. Good sound for 4" coaxial. Hoping for good water resistance as the second set are mounted sort of flat. OK, before someone uses one of the icons picture to follow.
JohnT Posted July 24, 2013 #15 Posted July 24, 2013 Here is what I have ended up with so far. The plates that I replaced the original plastic pieces with were my first attempt and are not as nice fitting as I hoped they might be. Over the winter I am going to make new ones that will fit better. Or at least I hope the new ones will fit better.
Huggy Posted July 25, 2013 Author #16 Posted July 25, 2013 OMG.......Its going to blow you out of the seat!!!!!! Kidding, impressive.
Heartbeat Posted August 14, 2013 #17 Posted August 14, 2013 Do these 4" speakers fit the front and rear of the 2nd Generations also? I can't seem to get the radio on my '99 to sound good when I'm riding; I've tried adjusting the treble and bass and can't get a good consistent sound.
