stickhandle2 Posted July 21, 2013 #1 Posted July 21, 2013 This past week I tried the CB on our new to us 2002 RSV, the person we purchased it off said they didn't have the head sets and never had any interest in using the CB. Just for kicks and giggles I thought I would see if at least I could receive with the CB, when I turned it on I would get a CB Err message. I have disconnected the 2 wires under the passenger set that go to the CB unit under the trunk and have also disconnected the battery to see if it would reboot the system, but have n't had any luck with either. My next step I would guess would be to check the connections in the fairing, has anyone else had this same message. Thanks in advance for your help. Mike.
playboy Posted July 21, 2013 #2 Posted July 21, 2013 Yes But not after cleaning all of the connections under the fairing. Mine would eventually lock up all of the functions.
dacheedah Posted July 21, 2013 #3 Posted July 21, 2013 I haven't run across that, checklist 1) the antenna with the tuning coil should be on the left side of the bike as you are sitting on it. 2) look at the black box under the trunk, open it ( two bands ) and check to see that the antenna ( It's a motorola plug like your antenna on your car) is plugged in, it should run out the left side to the antenna. 3) power chords are hooked up. If it's a no go then check for power at the unit or the fuse. 4) is your headset & mic plugged in, the cb won't work without a headset. 5) connections, open make sure the pins are all clean ( not green) put dielectric grease on the connectors.
Gary N. Posted July 21, 2013 #4 Posted July 21, 2013 Had the same issue on my '03. The dealer changed out the CB unit under the trunk about four times. Yamaha kept sending reconditioned units. Then I totalled the bike before ever getting it to work again.

I have not had much sucess with my CB either. I just write it off to user error. I try to tune in the squelch and either get all static or can only get someone line of site (like maybe 1/4 mile) So I just turn the racket off.

Thanks in advance for your help. Mike. It may just be a connector in the fairing... Once you split the fairing you will have access to all the large round connectors... they are black, and on the throttle side of the bike. Pull them all apart, one by one, shoot some electrical contact cleaner in, apply some dialectric grease to each one, then put them back together, and then be sure to 'zip-tie' them all together and anchor them to the brackets in the fairing so that they dont move around when riding and hitting bumps. This will help preserve the connectors. If you are lucky the CB will start working, but even if it doesnt, you will prevent future problems in those audio connectors.

On the black ones put the grease around the lip of the boots. It could be that the finals are jammed up also

When setting your swr load the bike as it would be used.
Guest tx2sturgis Posted July 21, 2013 #9 Posted July 21, 2013 (edited) If the OP is getting 'Err' on the CB display, there wont be any way to set the SWR...or even check it, at least not with the radio, as it is. When you get an error in the display on power-up, its not the SWR or antenna tuning that is doing that, its something in the electronics thats not happy. Either the control unit, the connectors, or the radio deck itself is at fault. The CB will receive without a headset, you just have to select the speakers for output. Rick Haywood Posted July 21, 2013 #12 Posted July 21, 2013 Your CB will work on the receiving end without the headsets plugged in. Just make sure it is set to speakers.
djh3 Posted July 21, 2013 #13 Posted July 21, 2013 Cheeda dont hink I got SWR any more. I quit fooling with CB back about the time they went to 40 channel. :rotf:Its no bigge so far. Thanks for the tip though, ya never know.
stickhandle2 Posted July 21, 2013 Author #14 Posted July 21, 2013 Thanks for all the tips. I will take the fairing apart and disconnect and clean to see what happens then. Thanks again. Mike
dacheedah Posted July 21, 2013 #15 Posted July 21, 2013 I would start under the trunk personally, easier to get to and work my way up front. It's a PM anyways
