YamaDuck Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 Let's all be honest, Yamaha, Harley, Honda and others make great dependable bikes now. Any would make a person proud to own. It is up to the individual to determine which bike is best for them. Same goes for upgrading and spending a lot of money. Is my current ride good enough?Do I want to go in debt to get all the new bells and whistles. Yes ABS is great and I would love to have it but I don't want to go in debt to get it. Reverse is nice but with care on selecting a parking spot it is not necessary. I try to park with the front up hill so then all I need is my handbrake to reverse. On board nav. The same reason I don't have it in my car I don't want it on my bike. I prefer a mountable GPS. I can use it in the car when I need it or I can use it on the bike when I need it. I pay $200 or a GPS rather than $1800 as part of the nav system which is a glorified name for GPS. Whenever you decide to upgrade be patient and look for deals. They are out there and whatever brand you go with be prepared for the good natured ribbing and be proud of what you ride.

I will keep riding my current rides, while saving some pennies. I will then try at some point in the future to deal with a private sale so I do not have to deal with the dealer and its nonsense. Cash is easier to negotiate when in hand. but I am OK waiting for the right time, the right bike. my bikes are right for me at this stage. glad Y'all helped me come to my senses
Guest tx2sturgis Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 glad Y'all helped me come to my senses Now just so you know, I was not saying you dont ride much. I have no idea how much you ride....but that is a factor, I would think, when trading for a touring bike....in other words, have the current bikes been unsuitable for the way you use them? Or do you want to begin to go on more trips, tour the states? Retired and wanting to cross the Rockies? I'm sure you will be happy either way...and I know how easily we can justify a new bike when we climb on and take it for a spin... I've done it myself. If I had unlimited funds, I'd own one of everything like Jay Leno...but...I'm happy with what I have. I bet you will be too, when the 'infatuation' wears off.
Godlover Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 In Iowa a person saves sales tax on the value of the trade in. Sometimes for me that will help make the deal over trading in a bike.
b2dad Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 Hey Barry (and everyone else..) You guys gave Barry alot of info to process and it seems he has made up his mind...but you all forgot one very important part to purchasing a new ride.... what about the passenger???? What did SHE think about it? Did she sit on the GW? Was she comfortable? How was HER leg room? Did she get to ride any of that 250 miles? HMMM????? You guys think it's all about you!!!! but you also need to consider your passenger...IF YOU HAVE ONE...Now if your significant other does not ride...then forgive me...but if she does...then please consider her and give her a vote. Don was very gracious when first looking at a new ride way back when...I sat on all kinds of scoots and did not like the seat of the GW. FOR ME! I am short legged (no wise cracks here) and it just did not fit me at the time. Same with the Harley...However, the RSV sit very well for me and when Don sat on it too, he appreciated the leg room for HIM and that's what we settled on together. I suppose if he had liked the GW or HD more than the RSV and wanted it really bad I would have given in to him, but at least he wanted my opinion. Thanks for letting me speak up...hope I didn't step on too many toes...Good luck Barry.

The wife who DOES ride, but not so often was not available for my ride. Therefore unable to get her honest feedback. She is a long legged beauty ( wife not bike) and fits well on RSV. Makes me look better too... But yes, she should be part of the process. That said, she was asked to participate but had previous engagements. As for now, I am standing pat on keeping the bikes I have. Tomorrow they will blowing up my phone trying to get me to commit. Since they have committed to X on trade in, my plan is to do same deal, same money with a 2012-13 model. Since they won't go for that, then we are done dealing. Funny thing is, every time I ride that RSV, I say to myself, why am I not riding her and enjoying her more?

bongobobny Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 Barry, one thing that wasn't mentioned, if you did get a Wing or any different bike it does NOT mean you have to leave this site!! We have several members that have Wings, HD's, Victorys, etc. and are still part of the family. By the responses in this thread alone it is obvious you have many people who like you and consider you a friend so stick around regardless...
iron ranger Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 Barry, I happened to be in Brooksville saturday and stopped to window shop at Barney's. The Goldwing looked good and reverse/abs would be great. But the 2000 Venture I ride has spoiled me. I love the room and comfort. Riding on air front and rear is cool too. But I found myself drooling over the Stratoliner I sat on. My 30 inch inseam found the Strat so much easier to balance, and sometimes I like to be in the wind. In my opinion we all need two bikes! I am looking forward to the new Indian Chief if I ever feel like bike payments again. Since my Bad Company cassette is stuck in the deck I just crank it up and ride on debt free. Good luck and take care, Iron Ranger.

I enjoyed meeting you and the gang at Patti and Dons. I have ZERO intentions of leaving the site. I enjoy the camaraderie, friends, insight and humor. You guys are simply awesome. No worries there. Iron Ranger: You are correct about the bike, looks sweet. However, I am afraid, unless the sweeten the lot with a 2012 GW, I am standing firm with my 2 bikes. I did some HW on the warranties they tried to get me to buy, the years and models in general. Next time you are in the area, hit me up. I live very close to there and would love to meet you. Barry
