starter issues

ok so i got some starter issues, i built a new starter modded it with a ground strap and installed it tested and it worked perfect. but now i've got the whole front end on and bam the starter is acting just like the old one wont work unless i tap it with a hammer first. the pos cable is in good shape the cylinoid is working correctly but it just wont work with the front end together. any ideas why?

Do you have a gasket installed under stator cover?

Sealant alone will cause similar issue.

I did that same thing to my 86' when I bought it in 2008. Worked for about a week. Such a pain in the ass, bought a brand new, $100 vmax starter on ebay and it's been perfect 50k and 5 years since. In my opinion, not worth fussing with. Just replace.
