1BigDog Posted July 18, 2013 #1 Posted July 18, 2013 My #3 coil arrived today. Couldnt find anything on it in the repair manual. Muffin suggested that I come in from the left side with a long angle socket. That didnt work so I was poking around on the right side and removed the stebel horn which gave my mitts some access but not enough. Looks like if I drop the right muffler and Y exhaust pipe from the #3 head I will be able to access the allen head bolts. It would have been real nice if Yamaha welded the nut bosses on the other side of the bracket, facing toward the motor rather then facing the wheel. I could have accessed the dam bolts that way with just the stebel horn out of the way. Glad im doing it and not the dealer.
Guest Posted July 18, 2013 #2 Posted July 18, 2013 I was able to get an allen wrench on the top bolt but unable to catch it on the lower bolt so......I took out my trusty dremel and cut a slot in the rear of the allen screw (remember the boss positions) and with a slender screw driver unscrew the bolt out. I cut a slot in the upper bolt as well. Now the fun starts. I was sent a front coil instead. Wire lead is about 4" too short. And you cant call Parts Shark. I went online for a "Live Chat" and after typing all the info in they came back as no operators were available at this time and to leave a message. Now that sucks. Getting real frustrated here.
Guest Posted July 18, 2013 #3 Posted July 18, 2013 Been waiting over an hour for Parts Shark live chat operator to respond. I went ahead and ordered the right coil from Boats.net here in FL for less money and less shipping charges then Parts Shark. At least they have an 800 # to contact them if anything comes up. Ill just return the front coil back to parts shark.
Guest Posted July 24, 2013 #4 Posted July 24, 2013 New coil came in today and I finally got it installed. After struggling to catch the bolts I noticed 2 bolts hidden behind the coil bracket that I was not able to see before. My poor vision limits me from seeing deep into the motor area. I was able to access the bolts and the whole bracket came out with both rear coils, making removal and installation a ton easier. Which leads me to my next point. Maybe im wrong but im sure that some who have read this thread and have changed their rear coil knew about this bracket bolt location but never bothered to respond. There were 139 looks at this thread but not one response even after I had mentioned about the trouble getting these bolts out in the first place. I guess sometimes some of us just fall between the cracks. Sometimes it really is what it is......
Freebird Posted July 24, 2013 #5 Posted July 24, 2013 Ruffy, It comes down to how many, if any, of those folks have ever replace the coil? Now I admit that I have. I will also tell you for a fact that I honestly don't remember how I did it or which bolts I removed. Sorry buddy. Wish I could have helped.
Beau-Kat Posted July 24, 2013 #6 Posted July 24, 2013 I changed my rear coils years ago, but had forgotten that they both came out with the bracket until you just mentioned it. Then, I remembered.
cecdoo Posted July 24, 2013 #7 Posted July 24, 2013 Never replaced mine just trying to learn something new, sorry I couldnt help ya out. Craig
crowrod Posted July 24, 2013 #8 Posted July 24, 2013 Ruffy , sorry for your inconvenience I replied to a similar post by Wayne on or about 6-17-13 telling how to do them, I guess I thought you would see it.
Cougar Posted July 24, 2013 #9 Posted July 24, 2013 I have replaced both rears and got to the bolts from the under side I believe.
LilBeaver Posted August 16, 2013 #10 Posted August 16, 2013 So there are some bolts that hold the rear coil mounting bracket in place or is there some other magic way of accessing the rear coils? I got under my bike last night to try to troubleshoot some running issues I have been having and see the nightmare of getting anything but a trained squirrel up there... ---- ### UPDATE: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showpost.php?p=775080&postcount=8 Found the post 'Southbound' referred to. Thanks.
Cougar Posted August 16, 2013 #11 Posted August 16, 2013 I am thinking if you remove the antifreeze over flow tank you can get the squirrel in there.
