OK How Do you get thte thermostat out?

OK I'm getting ready to replace the thermostat and what do I need to remove to get at the housing to remove it. I have removed the rad. But can not get at the back cap screw that holds the top of housing on to remove the thermostat.

Just went through that with mine. You have to take the exhaust pipe section off to get to that bolt. I tried 50 ways to keep from taking the pipe off. Wasted a lot of time. Just take the pipe off and it all is easy from that point on.

I didn't do it that way. I removed the two bolts at the bottom of the thermostat housing and the pipe came out at the water pump then at the thermostat and the thermostat housing moved over to the opposite side of the bike and then I took the top off of the thermostat housing. Do not like taking the exhaust pipes.

Remove the bolts and pull the exhaust pipe out a little to give yourself room to get that back bolt like Bill (KIC) said. The thermostat housing is Plastic so don't overtighten when you reinstall.

Yup. Just went through mine like that to fix a warped t'stat cover (we use to call the goose necks way back). Did not remove the exhaust pipe. You might as well get a new thermostat cover and the o rings for the pipe while you're at it.

And, while I was already down there and had stuff outa the way, I went ahead and upgraded my starter and ground cables to fix the slow cranking.

Not like I don't have enough work as it is. You guys keep coming up with MORE for me to do. This worse then working for a living. Just when I'm seeing the light at the end of the tunnel you guys find a way to move it out of SIGHT!!

Beginning to feel that way! at least I haven't been hit by the train........yet!

While you have it apart flush sysem with water hose . Youll be amazed how much comes out that aint antifreeze... Mud

Will do Big Lou, picked up thermostat at NAPA $10. I have replaced BOTH of the little lenses on the clutch and brake reservoirs. Looks good as new. Picked up new washers for the banjo bolts. And the little one for on the #2 crankcase cover. Things are starting to come together. But I need to do some work on the wife's car, replace rotors. So its off to work I go!!! Well out to the garage anyway.
