Trader Posted July 16, 2013 #1 Posted July 16, 2013 (edited) I've been thru the carbs (still on the bike) on my 88 several times with carb cleaner and compressed air. Twice with Marcarl and again myself. I use a few ounces of seafoam every 2-3 tank of gas. The bike does sit a week at a time sometimes when I just can't get out and ride. Here's what happening..... I usually use full choke to start the bike up. It fires right up and seems to run just fine. But...once it warms up....the idle hangs up about 3000 rpm! I don't think its a sticky throttle cable....although I'm going to lube it as the first thing to try. I thought it might be related to the cruise control but even if I don't use the cruise it still hangs up. So where do I start? The International is less than 2 weeks away and I want to get this fixed before I try to ride 1800 miles (return) Edited July 16, 2013 by Trader
Big Lou Posted July 16, 2013 #2 Posted July 16, 2013 I'd lube all cables . and if that dont work .throw some 2 cycle oil in it to lube moving parts inside ... just an idea.. i use duralube,, never sticks or rusts again.. dont let it get to the clutch
dacheedah Posted July 16, 2013 #3 Posted July 16, 2013 I agree to lube and inspect the throttle, pullback, cruise... Also look at the routing to see they arent being stretched. That will bind them
Snaggletooth Posted July 16, 2013 #4 Posted July 16, 2013 I've been through that. Make ya crazy. Like you mine starts great, idles.... good, and runs fine..... while warming up and on cooler days there is no change. When the temps are up and the motor would start to heat up the RPMs would run up to 2,500 or 3,000 RPM and sit there. Next time it cooled off back to normal. I chased everthing and lubed anything that moved. Had it in my mind I was dealing with a vacuum leak. Carb boots, vacuum lines and the vacuum caps. After replacing any vac line that looked questionable and the caps on the carb boots the problem seems to be gone. Been up in the high 90's again this year and idle RPM stay solid where I set them.
Huggy Posted July 16, 2013 #5 Posted July 16, 2013 Dirty carb can also cause this problem also if the diaphragm's stick it can cause this. Seen it a number of times on XJ and Secas. When we do a carb cleaning on them we make sure the diaphragm's can pass the clunk test. I put Stabil in my gas once a month it cleans out any kind of build up you may get if you let your bike sit for a week or more.
MiCarl Posted July 16, 2013 #6 Posted July 16, 2013 I'm assuming it'll idle at 1000RPM more or less a couple minutes in, choke off. But then when it's good and hot the idle speeds up. That is a lean condition. Could be a vacuum leak, could be dirty pilot jets/circuits or idle mixture adjustment. I've never seen it, but supposedly well out of sync can also cause it.
