KIC Posted July 16, 2013 #1 Posted July 16, 2013 Just thought I would tell what happened to my wife and I on Saturday. It has never happened to me before. I was working on my bike checking the charging system and the stator. I had a volt ohm meter attached to my battery and strapped to my GPS mount so I could watch the volts under various conditions. While I was riding around the neighborhood doing this, my wife walked out and asked if I would run her to the craft store not to far from our house. She jumped on the back and we ran down there. Now, before we get into a whole ATGATT argument, we usually wear all our gear. But, due to the short ride ( yes I know most accidents happen close to home) we only had on our ballcaps. My wife wore shorts and flip flops ( that is a 1st on the bike). Anyway..... at a stop light an older couple pulled up alongside us to our left and said something. When I realized they were talking to us, I responded with " I'm sorry ..what ? " The male leaned over his wife in the passenger seat and said "well at least your wearing hats for protection". My wife responded laughingly with "please don't tell our son... we usually wear our gear" ... The light turned green, they rolled up their window and drove on. Guess they told us....
dacheedah Posted July 16, 2013 #2 Posted July 16, 2013 Weren't wearing your robe and slippers were ya??
IronMike Posted July 16, 2013 #3 Posted July 16, 2013 We all do that, And I know two people recently that had less that 5 MPH crashes blocks from home and were off work for months. BUT, Whenever you do crash, you'll never have enough gear on anyways. I have 3 complete CE approved Armor suits, Draggin Jeans and Bon Armor, But this weekend I was out in Jeans and a T shirt But I didn't see the Jerks that you did. Or, they didn't see me. Anyways, I think its kind of irresponsible to dress more protected than your passenger anyways. But when I am on a trip or out pushing my skil level like on The Dragon oor Devils Triangle, or the like. Yea, all the gear. But to run down for some carb cleaner, no. Next time inform him TWICE as many people die in Auto crashes than Motorcycles, And you have some old helmets for sale. They didn't even have Ball caps on? Dare Devils eh? Yes thats true.
Huggy Posted July 16, 2013 #5 Posted July 16, 2013 Every one here has to wear a helmet that's the law and in my opinion a good one. But that's not what this about. I live on a secondary paved road which happens to be an extremely popular motorcycle route. Anyway if I see one bike in a day I see a hundred bikes a day go past the house! And I'd say only 1/3 of the riders wear any amour. Most wear leather vest and chaps. Then there's the no shirt and shorts bunch, riding there Gold Wings, I shake my head when I see them. I can just imagine the mess they will make if they go down. What gets me is this group is usually in the obese category! Then there's the crotch rocket group they do wear amour but they go so fast it wont do them any good in a crash anyway. I don't think they can see speed signs, as it's 30 Km going through our little village but they are hitting 80 past our house. One got splattered all over the road and neighbor's ditch and yard two years ago here. And to show who easy low speed accidents happen last week my brother put his HD Road King down. He was coming up to a intersection, slowed down to stop and there was a plastic pie container on the road all flattened. He saw it but couldn't avoid it. His front wheel hit it and slid sideways and down he went. Luckily he was going slow and all he did was scratch the crash bar. It doesn't take much to have an accident.
etcswjoe Posted July 16, 2013 #6 Posted July 16, 2013 What it was is they had heard how fast 1st gens are and just had to say something.

If your going to run over a piece pf plastc or flattened aluminum can, let off the brakes entirely and just roll over it. I had a rear tire, that tried to pass my front tire when i rolled the rear over a pop can on an exit ramp. It got stuck between the tire and road because i was braking...
Galapagos Posted July 16, 2013 #9 Posted July 16, 2013 Ya know, if you are not breaking the law its none of their business. If the guy driving the car is 100 years old you know he never even had a license test. Do you say that to him/her? No you do not. People can be a PITA.
KIC Posted July 16, 2013 Author #10 Posted July 16, 2013 I should state that they were nice about it. He wasn't being an @$$. Kinda like a grandfatherly statement. My wife thought maybe they knew somebody who was hurt or worse and didn't have on gear. At first I thought it was somebody we knew.. but maybe it was their way of passing on their "love" to bikers...
Hummingbird Posted July 16, 2013 #11 Posted July 16, 2013 riding gear is whatever you are wearing when you get on the bike. When I mow the grass for the first time in the spring it's a sure sign to get out the shorts. That's what I wear until the leaves start to fall. Sometimes I look a little silly with shorts, short sleeve shirt and a helmet but I don't bother to look in a mirror, so it's OK.

Guest tx2sturgis Posted July 17, 2013 #15 Posted July 17, 2013 The male leaned over his wife in the passenger seat and said "well at least your wearing hats for protection". Reply: 'Yesssir, these are DOT approved hats...wanna buy one for yourself?'
Snaggletooth Posted July 17, 2013 #17 Posted July 17, 2013 I've notice lawnmowers ain't what they used to be lately. Honda has one in the running at 130 MPH. Gear is probably a good idea.
