Doing a steering head adjustment this morning and found this piece. I had the handlebars, steering crown, upper fairing panels, left and right hoods and the upper ring nut removed. It resembles the cotter pin from the brake calipers but it's a little larger. Let me beat you to it, I know it's a quarter. Thanks.

Unless my memory is really bad...and it may well be...I don't think that part came from any of the areas that you mentioned. I don't even remember see anything like that anywhere on the bike.

Ok, wild guess here. But the only larger clip I can think of in that area would be one on the headlight adjustment assembly.

There is a flange on the bottom end of the headlight adjustment rod that has a clevis pin through it and is held in place by that type of clip. Would be a bit larger than a brake pad pin clip. That clip may be too big for that.

But knowing how far one of those clips can jump.......:confused24:

The only clip I can remember that even comes close to that one are the clips that hold the brake pad holding pins in place.. Im not so sure though, that the clips are as large as a quarter although I think the clips are that size.. Its only been about 4 years since I have seen the caliper brake pins on a RSV

I believe those are called hitch pins. The only place i have seen them (so far) on my 84 1st Gen is on the joint where the driver backrest attaches.

Good luck

That clip is a safety clip to prevent the loss of the handle bar holder nuts. The handlebars mount to the holder, the holder bolts through the upper triple tree, the nuts go on the studs projecting under the triple tree and the clip goes through the hole near the end of the studs.

Number 16 in this pic.
