As I'm a 1 month old owner of my 89 Venture Royale, I've got a few questions for all here.

First, after picking up the motorcycle, I decided to get some routine maint. done on her before my first trip of 100 mi or more. Is there a list of items I should be aware of here on the website, or would it be just as good to follow the owners manual. It's at the 35k mark and runs awesome, but any suggestions would be helpful.

Second, I jusyt noticed on the instrument cluster, in the area where the digital readout is, there is a piece of black electrical tape covering the red "Warning" light, which is illuminated. The owners manual says that this could be from the battery water level being low, so I topped it off. Is there a way to reset the light? Or should I be concerned and proceed further? at idle, the bike is running at 12.5v, 13.5v on the road.

That light can idicate a number of failures and even low fuel.

A common reason is the battery probe is showing low water in the battery if it is a wet cell OR if the battery has been replaced with one that has no way to plug the probe in like a sealed cell AGM or Gel. .

Look at your battery. Is there a wire that looks like it plugs into one of the cell caps? If not the probe is missing.

This thread can show you how to build a bypass for that to turn the light off.

Snaggle,

The battery that is on the bike is a "Batteries Plus" brand. There was no probe going down into one of the cells, hence I was wondering how it was sensing a low water level. I'll look for the probe and try to replace it. Thanks

The motorcycle has a display below the flashing light and above the clock. The right side of the display is the fuel gauge. The left and center have alert icons. One or more of those icons should be lit to indicate why the light is on.

Side stand down (top left icon) will activate the warning light. If there is a problem with the battery electrolyte sensor a little picture of the battery will be lit up.

Having said that, I just put a Batteries + battery in my 89. The construction of their battery will not allow the probe to be inserted and I had to put the bypass on mine. If the battery icon isn't lit on the display yours might already be bypassed.

:sign yeah that:

do a search for battery warning bypass.....it's a 10 min job and will cost all of about 10 cents in parts.

So simple even I could do it!
