Huggy Posted July 13, 2013 #1 Posted July 13, 2013 Since I have my VR tore down, :whistling:what things should I replace/do that are going to give problems down the road?
Snaggletooth Posted July 13, 2013 #2 Posted July 13, 2013 Clean and lube the drive shaft with Moly grease. Break down the rear drive on the output side and remove the rubber buffer to clean and lube the pins for that. A dried dirty one creates some odd clicking noises. If you have the rear wheel off you're half way there already. Remove, clean and inspect the bolt for the side stand pivot. Don't over tighten it. Change the rear drive gear oil. And there are a few other things....
Peder_y2k Posted July 13, 2013 #3 Posted July 13, 2013 Adjust the valves (26K/52K/78K miles), Redo carbs. Steering head bearings. etc. -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA
Huggy Posted July 14, 2013 Author #6 Posted July 14, 2013 OK all the plastic is off. I have rebuilt the carbs replaced air/fuel mixture needles, and two other jets (4 of each) that I did not like the look of, replaces all the "O" rings, seals and gaskets in the carbs and adjusted float levels. Put carbs back on the bike. Fuel filter have new one. Cleaned out the fuel pump of old gas. Have clean replacement tank. Checked fuel level sender, it works. Waiting on new used petcock and right side controls and throttle. Should have Tuesday or Monday. Valve shim check taken care of, new valve cover gaskets installed, new donuts done on valve covers. Also will pull the drive shaft and will grease and change oil in the rear end. Also plan on putting grease fittings in the rear suspension. Tomorrow I will locate and clean up ALL grounds. Clean and put dielectric grease on ALL connections. Will check head bearings. Bike only has 8100 kilometers on it. And as I get into it I have no reason to believe it has anymore then that. Right now I'm going to sit down and have a drink of Crown Royal!
bongobobny Posted July 14, 2013 #7 Posted July 14, 2013 You better share that crown royal, especially if it's the black label...
Huggy Posted July 14, 2013 Author #8 Posted July 14, 2013 You better share that crown royal, especially if it's the black label... My wife picked it up and I asked for the "Black Label" But NO she got the regular "Crown Royal":backinmyday:. Says she didn't hear me say get the "Black Label". So now I'll have to suffer drinking the regular stuff until I go to town. Or go to the States for a day or two and pick one up there.
Marcarl Posted July 14, 2013 #9 Posted July 14, 2013 You don't get things together right using that stuff,, best use Fluid Film.
Huggy Posted July 15, 2013 Author #10 Posted July 15, 2013 Your right there Marcarl!!! That's why I wait till I'm finished for the day. Well all most finished for the day before I have one:backinmyday:.

Huggy Posted July 15, 2013 Author #12 Posted July 15, 2013 On a serious note. I need to replace the fuel line from the fuel pump to the carbs. What should I use? I couldn't get the old line to come off at the carbs so I had to cut a couple inches off to get the carbs out. My concern is kinking the fuel line at the pump end and starving the carbs of gas and messing up the fuel pump.

Take the old fuel line with you and match it up, just buy enough to make a bigger bend at the fuel pump and you'll be fine.
Huggy Posted July 15, 2013 Author #14 Posted July 15, 2013 OK, thanks Marcarl. I was thinking along those lines. Another question I should have asked is should I buy the black rubber lines from CT. Or go with the clear plastic ones that the Yamaha dealers sell. Which is best? Or does it matter.
Peder_y2k Posted July 15, 2013 #15 Posted July 15, 2013 Buy polyurethane hose in either clear or black. No substitute. About $1.50/ft (US) -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA
Condor Posted July 15, 2013 #16 Posted July 15, 2013 Take the old fuel line with you and match it up, just buy enough to make a bigger bend at the fuel pump and you'll be fine. While poking around on McMaster-Carr looking at fittings to replumb with a 42S fuel pump, I ran across right angle fuel line connectors in plastic and brass in 5/16". It seems to me it would be easier to stash one in the trunk and if needed to by-pass the OEM pump to just take the lines off and put them on the 'L'. Rather than messing around with flexible fuel line trying to keep it from kinking......
Huggy Posted July 15, 2013 Author #17 Posted July 15, 2013 Buy polyurethane hose in either clear or black. No substitute. About $1.50/ft (US) -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA OK will do that today. Reinstalled the carbs. Replacement petcock and throttle should be here tomorrow. Will then reinstall gas tank and see if we can get the engine to fire up! Will get one for sure Condor and keep on the bike. I need to take the XJ out for a run its getting testy from being ignored while I work on the VR.
Big Lou Posted July 15, 2013 #18 Posted July 15, 2013 Since I have my VR tore down, :whistling:what things should I replace/do that are going to give problems down the road? INSURANCE COMPANIES:whistling:
Huggy Posted July 15, 2013 Author #19 Posted July 15, 2013 INSURANCE COMPANIES:whistling: Have that covered may just transfer from my XJ to the VR. Also how tight do the clamps on the air box/carb side need to be? The clamps from the manifold to the carbs are fine but if I tighten the ones on the air box to much they pop off.
