We had a biker hit us!

Before you all get angry, a bicyclist actually hit us in our car. We were going to the Newport Motorcycle Rally on Sunday. We turned right. The crosswalk light was orange. I yelled "Ron Stop"! I saw to my right a big guy on a ten speed bicycle riding into our car. The guy went down, hit his head on the concrete. I jumped out of the car. There just happened to be a medic, a woman studying to be a doctor, and probably 6 others ran to help. I grabbed napkins out of my glove box. The ambulance, fire truck, and police showed up. They took the report.

They checked the injured guy out and he refused to go to the hospital. He seemed to be cognitive. He had a gash over his left eye, and scrapes and lacerations on his face. The medics left, after the man refused help.

After, they left the man seemed to get worse. He had symptoms of a concussion. We kept saying he needs to go to the hospital. There was a plastic bag attached to the carrier on his bike. He acted like he had no idea where it came from. Oh I forgot to say the man who hit us is a lawyer in Kentucky. Ron called twice to see how he was. The police said he did finally go to the hospital to get checked out. So that is my story and I am sticking to it.

Forgot to say, there is a big dent in the hood of our car, and the bumper was knocked loose. If we had been on our RSV, we would have gone down for sure. So we were lucky, I suppose and so was the lawyer.

I have not been to happy with bike lanes on roadways around here. They force a car turning right to turn across the path of a bicycle going straight. The bicyclist may not be in a position to see the automobiles turn signals. And the bicyclist may be out of the vision of the vehicle making the turn. It seems a very poor design. Especially in congested areas. It is a recipe for disaster.

Where I come from, you take out a bicycle it's 10 points. I am not sure if they hit you that you get the 10 points. I hate sharing the road (rural highway) with bicycles.

The other problem was he was going to ride on the crosswalk, which according to the walk light was orange. The basic error on his part was he did not stop.

I ride a bicycle myself. I believe a bicyclist has to always anticipate what the car or traffic is going to do. We were in the right turn lane too. So it was obvious we were turning right.

Some may get their knickers in a twist over what I am about to say, but I hate sharing the road with a bicycle. They are an endangerment as bikes aren't solid enough to handle certain road conditions. They can't keep up with traffic, so you have to slow down until you can pass them. They dont have to have any of the licenses or plating or insurance that we do driving cars or motorcycles.

 

I know folks like to ride bikes, there are a crap load down here in Texas. If a bicycle wants to share the road with me, then share the tax burden of the upkeep of the road.....thats how I feel about it

Mike I have problems as a cyclist with auto drivers that do not realize that that lane is a through lane for bicycles. Think of them as Gavel Trucks or even more importantly as a motorcycle lanes..... you have to be aware of what is in then.... you just drove past it....yup you gotta know what is there before you turn.... I think they call it a shoulder check up here in Canada. If you are uncomfortable with them.... don't visit Victoria, we have the highest cycling numbers in Canada.... therefore the most cycling lanes.

 

For fun last month I volunteered to ride my motorcycle as an escort in a local Triathlon, those cyclists.... Olympic class go very fast.... I had to back off to let the fellow I was in lead with to take the corners, I could not corner the Venture as fast as he could his cycle.

Perhaps true but if you are in a right hand turn lane making a right hand turn. You don't expect a vehicle to be going straight on your right. Also if you were stopped say for a light you may not have just passed the bicycle. He could have come out of a parking lot etc. It is called a blind spot for a reason. My point is it doesn't matter who might be at fault. It is a dangerous situation compounded by poor design. The results are often fatal to the bicyclist and In my opinion it doesn't need to be that way.

Been there, done that, just yesterday on Cook St., coming into the village. For several weeks every year for the last 20 years I have experienced Victoria on bicycle and by car, and I know personally what Kevin is talking about. BUT it is my unhumble opinion that bicyclists should NOT PASS a vehicle on the right in an intersection or when approaching an intersection, and if you do and if I have signalled my right turn, and if I cut you off, and if you dare give me an ear full through my open passenger window, you can count on me "arranging" that both of us will be stopped shortly thereafter where upon I will continue our verbal exchange and it WILL result in you receiving an even bigger ear full from me!

Around here bicycles are supposed to follow the rules of the road. This means no passing on the right. Unfortunately few cyclists seem to follow the rules. I just spent two days with the Defenders MC riding escort for the Cowichan MS bicycle ride. Trying to control 300-400 cyclists is like herding cats. Last summer my wife and I visited Sidney BC. It was a Sunday and we sat at a corner cafe and watched the traffic. Of approximately 60 or so cyclists we saw go past only 4 actually stopped at a red light, the rest just blew through it forcing cars to hit the brakes. I saw several ride up Beacon street, which is one way, against the traffic and riding two or three abreast again forcing cars to hit the brakes or swerve into another lane. I saw several cyclists riding on the crowded sidewalk swerving through the pedestrians. Of all the cyclists I saw only the 4 who stopped at the light were wearing their helmets. We are bombarded with articles in the local papers about cyclists demanding their rights and respect. It seems they are unwilling to give to others what they are demanding for themselves.

I agree bicyclist have to follow the rules of the road.

Like I said it would have been worse for us if we had been on the bicycle.

Another issue, what about the damage to our car? No offers to fix it yet and probably never will be. We are out the money for the damage I am sure. And we did nothing wrong.

Your right it is tourist "season" and we have heard's of them roaming around the beach at Turkey Point. And gaggles of them wondering down the road in front of my place!! Calling the MNR right now to get my license!!!!

Biggest problem here is we get PACKS of these people who think they are in the Tour De France bike race and they will take up the whole lane on uphill/downhill grades at either end of our town/village:bang head:.
