Well I am finally getting back to my carb rebuild now that I have everything I need. I have one set of two done and back together. didn't like the looks of one of the pilot screws and found that someone had lost the washer off one so replacing all of them with new sets. Also didn't like the condition of pilot jet in the jet assembly block so replacing all of them :smash2:. Replacing all the gaskets. Replacing all screws except those used to make adjustments with SS cap screws and SS button head cap screws. With luck I'll have the carbs all done tomorrow. Just waiting for new throttle and petcock, my brother has them and is shipping them to me. Also need to check valve shims and install new cover gaskets. I have a new gas tank and will install that as soon as the petcock arrives. Will clean old one out this winter and will keep if anyone should need one. So with any luck I'll be able to try to start the "Beast" :eek: as my wife calls it in about a week. :mo money:

Sounds like you've made good choices so far. Don't neglect the condition of the slide bores, and slides and diphragms. Also confirm the diaphragm slide spring free lengths, as they should all be identical, or within 2mm. Be precise in adjusting the floats because fluid level inside the carb is critical for CV carbs. When everything is near perfect, best fuel economy AND performance can be excpected.

OK, I'm gonna play the bad guy here and bring up the old "while you're in there" thing again.

 

As long as you are doing the valve gaskets don't forget to order the donuts that go on the valve cover bolts. Lets see..... you'll need all 16 of them. Nobody wants to hear that but you might as well get it done this time. They run about $2.00 each.

When you go to reseal the new gaskets with the old donuts on the bolts they have already been compressed for a while. Not going to seal right.

 

I know some of the guys have tried to tighten them down............ a little more, and run into trouble. They end up breaking the bolts off at the top of the head.

 

These bolts are shoulder bolts. When they hit tight, that's all ya get. More than that they snap off.

 

Save yourself some trouble down the road.

 

I don't know if you picked up on this bit of info but but when ordering valve cover gaskets get the 2nd gen ones. Same gasket, but the 2nd gen ones have a bit of an extended lip on them around the edge. Makes install a lil simpler.

Got it covered, valve cover donuts, and thanks for the heads up on using 2nd Gen gasket on valve covers.

Don't forget to use something to keep these things clean. Sea-Foam is the #1 choice around here but with the price of it I have used Marvel Mystery oil some in the mix I use and it seems to do good in keeping a system clean. With the crud they sell us for gas now it is almost a necessity.

I use Stabil. I know its meant to be used for storage BUT it is great for keeping your carbs clear of any build up due to fuel in the system. It is especially recommended if you let your bike sit for any length of time. Like stupid continuously miserable rainy weather where you spend all the nice riding days cutting the DAM* grass that has grown due to all the rain and humidity!!!!:bang head: Also it is one of those things that I learned from an old Harley mechanic. The old Harley guys put it in every few tank ups.

Now we know why those Hardleys are so Slow!!!:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:I use the Marvel because of price and I mix it with others. It seems to work well. Just what ever makes you feel good.
