I know that we motorcycling folks don't always like new laws But I think this is good.

From my AMA magazine's STATEWATCH section.

South Carolina Laws

-Motorcyclists must now take a skills test when renewing their beginner motorcycle license permits, under new rules that went into effect June 3. The rider must pass the skills test to get a motorcycle license. Failure results in a renewed learning permit.

Officials decided to impose the new rule because so many riders with learner permits were simply renewing their permits rather than making an attempt at passing the skills test.-

I think that is a good rule. Learn to ride and properly handle your motorcycle, show them what you can do, and get that license. Better for everybody.

:sign yeah that: I agree. From some of the new riders I'm seeing around here I have trouble believing the got a license in the first place. (or ever had one at all) Scary to watch.

At least they are trying to correct a known problem. Points for that.

One of the guys I work with has renewed his learners 7 times and I doubt if he could pass the skills test, tried to get him to take the MSF course but he says he does not need it.

It was not too many years ago that our motor vehicle branch felt that only 1/3 of the riders on the road in summer HAD a license. Now riders do a written, if pass you need and escort for 6 weeks minimum, take a skills test, get L permit for 18 months, take road test, get full license.

The 18 months is adjusted if you are fully licensed to drive car already. No mandatory rider training YET. I feel there should be.

Oregon is phasing in mandatory skills training for new motorcycle endorsements. Not sure how this will affect those moving in from other states with a license already.

Now, if we could mandate a civics, democracy and fiscal prudence skills training for legislators we would have something.

Seems a bit over do-ish if you ask me. But they are getting thier money. So much for "free health care" and the lot in Canada. I think its good to have folks "prove" so to speak of thier motor vehicle skills. Bikes are way different than cars. I would be for anyone over say 60 to have to complete a writen test and a driving skills every 4yr or so too. Some of our older folks here scare the heck out of me. :shock3:

So what you are saying that everyone 60 and older on this site scare the heck out of you?

Hmmm, the ones on HERE that I have met (Mechanic and I have met a lot) that are 60 or older, I have far more comfort in their abilities then most of the 30 or less crowd.

In Oregon you pay $179 for a 15-hour course for novice riders. The course takes place over three days and provides seven hours of classroom instruction and eight hours of range. At the end you have a skills eval and written test and you get a card you take to DMV to get the license. Pretty easy and worthwhile.

Beginners riding course is mandatory for anyone in Texas to get a new m/c endorsement or license.

If you are caught riding without the proper license, the officer can impound the bike on the scene.

Bikes are indeed different from cars but the differences are irrelevant. I would go you one better. In my NSHO, anyone who wants the privilege of driving anything should get tested every 10 years. Licences are good for 5 years around here so that would be every other licence renewal. There are lots of old folks who are good drivers and there are lots of young folks who are good drivers but there are way more really lousy drivers of all ages. Everyone would likely benefit from a required refresher course. :soapbox: :Cool_cool36:

Here in Florida, anyone with an under 21 plate, Has a very high insurance rate. But then again, a lot of the never make it to 21, the way they ride down here

As for the OP, I fully support this law! Here in MI I got my endorsement two years ago, I was 17 and just had my basic license at that point, took the MSF course over two weekends with my buddy (would have done 1 weekend class but my friend had no idea how to ride so he wanted the longer less intensive class) and then when you passes that class went into the sec of state, took the eye test and a 9 or so question multiple choice test and I was endorsed with my full MC license.

Sleeperhawk read my post again.

I try to refrain from using like everyone, all the time and never. They are very indefinate. What I was trying to get across is some of our elderly folks here in Fla may have a hard time passing a skills test. Heck some of the others woul too I supose. How often where you live do you have someone make the local 7-11 or bufett a "drive in" style place because they forgot gas on right brake on left??

Just as an aside, there have been numerous times I see the driving school cars (w/o students) zipping around like the rest of the idiots on the road. So even some of the so-called "teachers" don't drive like they should.

I do agree on better standards and tiers for getting a license, both car & cycle. And something for periodically testing too, for all ages. My aunt (79 y.o.) just totalled her car. Went off road & hit a parked car. Daylight, no other traffic. Just couldn't see the road. Finally admitted that she couldn't see and had given up driving. Luckily no one got hurt. I know it'll be hard for me to give up driving when that time comes.
