mrsteve Posted July 5, 2013 #1 Posted July 5, 2013 Hello All, I haven't had a bike for 3 years and that is killing me. My last bike was a 1984 Goldwing that I got with 60,000 miles on it, I buried it with 223,000+ miles on it. I commute 100 miles a day for work and just filled out a credit app. for a Venture. My question for the group is what kind of life expectancy is average for a 2005 Venture with 32,000 miles on it. I really like the looks of the bike and hope it will live long enough to make us both happy. OK, I do have 1 more question (for now) what kind of gas mileage can I expect? I am 60 years old and got all the crazy out of me a long time ago. OK that's b.s. I still love building and flying airplanes! But I don't want to put gas in my truck anymore I'd rather put it in something fun.(airplanes and bikes) Thanks Steve
XV1100SE Posted July 5, 2013 #2 Posted July 5, 2013 32,000 miles is nothing. Bike isn't even broken in yet. 4 cylinders are different from vtwins. You should expect 200,000 mile + with oil changes, regular maintenance. Gas mileage.... U.S. gallon about 38mpg
randy2 Posted July 5, 2013 #3 Posted July 5, 2013 (edited) Great bike.i just rode accross canada on mine and back from the west coast us towing a bunkhouse camper and riding 2 up.i also do regular iron butt long distance riding on her.great support from this site and a easy bike to work on makes this my keeper ride:080402gudl_prv: Edited July 5, 2013 by randy2
eusa1 Posted July 5, 2013 #5 Posted July 5, 2013 Mine only has 170,000 and adding fast, i have no concerns about 200k-+ I know another member with 220k and runs great. 35-45 +mpg depends how you drive
bongobobny Posted July 5, 2013 #7 Posted July 5, 2013 Ummmm, depending on your age it might outlive you! It's nothing to get 200000 miles out of it as long as you give it proper maintenance. The only issue will be your rear shock but if you spend the extra money for a really good aftermarket shock when the stock one goes that should be the end of that issue. The stock ones like to leak. The carbs will need occasional adjustment but it is not a huge deal. Many of us periodically run a half can of seafoam thru a couple of tanks and drive it like ya stole it. It helps keep them running properly. BTW these bikes like higher RPM's so don't be afraid to rev it up now and then. We have a pretty decent tech savy crowd here so stick around and ask questions!!
M61A1MECH Posted July 5, 2013 #8 Posted July 5, 2013 There is a retired Air Force gentleman , named Mr. T, here in central Florida that I ride with on occasion, the last time I rode with him he had something on the order of 365,000 on his 99 Venture, l would not worry about the Venture as far as longevity.

Wow that just might be a record for total mileage. Hope the owner enjoys anther 35 k + to top it out over 400k miles & still keep going. Larry
BuddyRich Posted July 6, 2013 #10 Posted July 6, 2013 Yea, Figure on the bike burying you this time.... You'll wear out before it does.
Barrycuda Posted July 6, 2013 #11 Posted July 6, 2013 Mine only has 170,000 and adding fast, i have no concerns about 200k-+ I know another member with 220k and runs great. 35-45 +mpg depends how you drive ONLY, ONLY...170,000 Mike? I have a mere 70k on BOTH bikes. About 35k on each and IDK if I can ever get to 170 with both bikes let alone RSV. That said, to answer the question, numerous people have reported and sold bikes well over 200k. The ride is exceptional. I am sure you'll have no issues with your machine.
mrsteve Posted July 6, 2013 Author #12 Posted July 6, 2013 Thanks for all of your replies, I feel much better about investing in a bike that looks as good as the Venture and am looking forward to riding again. Thanks Steve
VentureFar Posted July 6, 2013 #13 Posted July 6, 2013 I got my 2007 with 5000 miles on it and I am 61, I realized this will be the last bike I will own ( like said above) You will get 35-40 mpg depending on conditions but you can get 2-4 more mpg if you get a baggershield.com as advertised top right corner. They give a discount to Venturerrider.org members. Pushing so much less air I have seen 4 more mpg at 70 mph ( actual - not speedometer) I spent 3 years researching a replacement for my Honda Shadow Spirit 1100 and for all the reasons you read about on this forum, it is the right choice for a touring bike. To make it a commuting bike suggest you read about "leveling Links" and "narrower front tire" - both make a huge difference in slow speed handling. Welcome to the Wonderful World of Venture Riding ! VentureFar....
Morev4 Posted July 6, 2013 #14 Posted July 6, 2013 99 110k and still roars with the Bub mufflers with Kyryaken slash tip mufflers, rides better than when it left the showroom floor and looks good all these years later/. I pulled into a local bar a week ago and some dude asked if it was new. "Nope 14 years old he absolutely could not believe it. Told him one coat of canuba wax every year, keep it in the garage, is all I do.
Sylvester Posted July 6, 2013 #15 Posted July 6, 2013 My 2002 Midnight Venture is over 180k miles and I have never had a problem. No rear shock failure or any of the other problems I have read about. Good maintenance is important.
Phoneman1981 Posted July 7, 2013 #16 Posted July 7, 2013 Hello Steve: This forum has made owning a motorcylce so much more fun than going it alone. More knowledge here than anyone cycle shop could ever have! My 05 RSTD is nearing the 45K mark. I noticed a used 05 on ebay yesterday. The 127K miles caught my eye. I am jealous!!!! Hope you enjoy it here.
Mike G in SC Posted July 7, 2013 #17 Posted July 7, 2013 (edited) The Royals are solid. Look at the bike, look at maintenance records. (Don't look at mine. Mine are not show bikes, they are go bikes.) A friend recently bought a well maintained 2006 RSV with 63k miles and a ton of ad-ons. He has had to replace the stator and a frayed cable so far (out of warranty). So, used is used, just like a car. The Royals are like buying a used Honda Accord,,,, likely a solid choice. But there are a few components you will see on this forum that "may" go, typically around 50-60 k miles: Rear Shock Stator Fuel Pump. Some never seem to go, but if they go, you get them fixed and go on. Edited July 7, 2013 by Mike G in SC
mrsteve Posted July 7, 2013 Author #18 Posted July 7, 2013 So now that I know that I will probably out live the bike I wonder if I will out live the payments. Picked up my new (used) ride last night and rode the 60 miles home. I think I'm in lust. What a great bike. It was just getting dark out, the sky was pink with some purple and smoke from the fire on Mt. Charleston. The temperature is down to a bone chilling 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Turned on some tunes, yes the classic rock station, into first gear and off I go. The love affair has begun. Steve
