tz89 Posted June 30, 2013 #1 Posted June 30, 2013 (edited) My mechanic filled oil above the sight glass, so today I used a plastic tube to siphon about a good half a pint out more or less to get it between the marks. That would probably have been okay left in there, but I couldn't tell how much over it was. Is there any way to have estimated the overage? I have a spin on filter, and even though I think the manual calls for 4 qts I use about 3 1/2 when I do it myself.. Edited June 30, 2013 by tz89 clarity

I think somewhere the first gens call for 4.? qts??, and that's what the mechanic probably used, and that's probably what it would take if it were bone dry. The reason it doesn't take the full 4 is that there's a pool of oil in the secondary gear cavity that won't drain, and a lot of residual oil on the walls of the crankcase. I just put in three qts. and use the last one to fill to the center of the marks. Run it a bit to see if it drops any, and top it off if needed.
