etcswjoe Posted June 30, 2013 #1 Posted June 30, 2013 On my East coast loop after MD I kept running through rain and thought how nice it would have been if my GPS had a weather map overlaid on top of the street map. Does anyone know if such a thing exists?
MiCarl Posted June 30, 2013 #2 Posted June 30, 2013 I have my doubts. Maps are fairly static and radio transmission is global. Weather is dynamic and on local broadcasts.
camos Posted June 30, 2013 #3 Posted June 30, 2013 I think if you had a data plan then a smartphone or tablet might give you what you want. There are quite a few weather radar sites like this one that display currently active conditions.
Peder_y2k Posted June 30, 2013 #4 Posted June 30, 2013 I just use a weather stone: http://www.littlemillrocks.com/images/Sun%20weather%20rock.JPG Works every time -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA
etcswjoe Posted June 30, 2013 Author #5 Posted June 30, 2013 (edited) Looks like the Zumo 665 offers it using an XM WX service but at 100 a month I think I will pass. Got a tablet for fathers day will have to see how well that works. Freebird Posted June 30, 2013 #6 Posted June 30, 2013 100.00 a month? Where did you get that info? I don't pay anywhere near that. I think I pay an extra $3.00 per month or something like that.

Condor Posted June 30, 2013 #8 Posted June 30, 2013 I have an APP on my phone that will show weather fronts moving across your specific area call RAINDAR. I also have an APP fron the Weather Channel that gives a slew of weather info. Using both together you can pretty much now what the day holds for you.
Winddancer Posted June 30, 2013 #9 Posted June 30, 2013 if you have an android phone try rainy days https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.neenbedankt.rainydays&hl=en great little program, very accurate, I ride over 20,000 miles a year and I used it almost daily,, it doesn't overlay a gps map, but it does overlay google maps so you can zoom to street level and see what going on..
PGunn Posted June 30, 2013 #10 Posted June 30, 2013 I use the trip planner on underground weathers site.... http://www.wunderground.com/roadtrip/
Beau-Kat Posted June 30, 2013 #12 Posted June 30, 2013 About four years ago, I was on my MM and leaving my daughter's house in Parsippany, NJ about 8pm in the rain headed home. Now I only had the cheapo Garmin Nuvi 200 and that thing showed rain where I was, just like on the Weather Channel radar. As I traveled back to SC overnight, I watched as the rain moved in and out of my traveling areas and respectively on and off the screen of my gps. Didn't know I could see rain on gps. Haven't used it in the rain since, so can't say it still does. Actually, it is raining outside now. I'm gonna get it out of the truck and see if it will indicate rain.
Beau-Kat Posted June 30, 2013 #13 Posted June 30, 2013 Yup, my old Nuvi shows where the current rain is in my area. Am I missing something in the topic for this thread?
etcswjoe Posted June 30, 2013 Author #14 Posted June 30, 2013 Yup, my old Nuvi shows where the current rain is in my area. Am I missing something in the topic for this thread? Does it have an extra service or something on it?
Beau-Kat Posted June 30, 2013 #15 Posted June 30, 2013 No. Nothing special about it that I know. Just bottom line Nuvi at the time she bought it. It isn't even the 200W (wide screen version). My wife gave it to me new in 2007, I think. I haven't even updated the road maps. I do have it set to "most detail" on the map features.
Condor Posted June 30, 2013 #16 Posted June 30, 2013 Ya'll can send any rain you don't want out west. Went to pick up my daughter from a sleep over and the very accurate temp guage in the rear view read 111degs. Yikes!!!

Beau-Kat Posted June 30, 2013 #18 Posted June 30, 2013 Joe, Just went outside and checked with the Nuvi 780 that is a nicer unit and has the latest updated maps. I did see that if I zoom out too far (out past about the tri-county area you and I live within), the rain won't really show up.
crowrod Posted June 30, 2013 #19 Posted June 30, 2013 My Zumo 550 with a gxm-30 antenna will give me a 5 day local forcast plus weather warnings for surrounding countys its also has navi traffic shows construction ,accidents, traffic jams ect ect. weather and traffic are $7.00 a month with a xm package very nice for traveling.

etcswjoe Posted June 30, 2013 Author #21 Posted June 30, 2013 Guess I am going to have to buy a smartphone.
JerryT Posted July 1, 2013 #22 Posted July 1, 2013 Zumo 665 with xm weather radar and xm service does it. Works very well for me and on longer rides worth every penny. Yes you do have to pay a monthly subscription. It's gone up a bunch in the last 4 years I've had it. I think around $20 per month for both xm radio and the weather radar service. Yes I think you could get the same thing on your smart phone, but the garmin works continuously while your riding and give alerts to changes and shows it right on the gps. Totally a personal thing, but if mine quite today, tommorow I'ld be looking for another one.
ZLDRider Posted July 22, 2013 #23 Posted July 22, 2013 My Garmin 478 shows weather super-imposed over the map. You have to subscribe to XM weather. You get XM Radio too. The price varies depending on area and time of year, sales specials, etc. but, it was no where near $100 per month. More like the $3/mo someone else reported. One caveat is that the Garmin 478 was discontinued a few years ago but, you can still find some via eBay or Craigs list.
